A:Answer the following questions:
1-Describe the relationship between Ann and Chris?
Ann was Chris and Larry’s next door neighbor and were brought up together. She was Larry’s girlfriend before he went to the war. Chris has been thinking of a wife for three years since his brother was considered missing. He felt that the only suitable lady to be his wife was Ann. He invited her to their house to propose marriage to her although he knew that his mother will not agree as Ann was Larry’s girl and she doesn’t believe that Larry was dead. Ann expected that Chris will propose marriage to her and that’s why she came to their house as she agreed.
2-Describe Joe Keller?
He was a business man of about sixty years of age. He seemed to be a solid worker who has built himself. When he speaks you know that he is uneducated. He is a likeable person, a loving father and a good husband. Family is everything to him that’s why he didn’t feel guilty as he has made everything for the family sake. He has committed a terrible thing and doesn’t regret it as he doesn’t believe that he has done wrong
3-Who is Dr. Jim? What do you know about him?
Dr. Jim is the Keller’s neighbor. He was a doctor but he doesn’t like to work as a doctor to cure patients. He liked to work in medical research to help the society. Although he doesn’t like to work as a doctor but he worked to please his wife who was materialistic and wanted him to get a lot of money.
4-How did Frank help Kate to believe that Larry was still alive?
Frank helped Kate to believe that Larry was still alive as he was working on Larry’s horoscope trying to prove that the 25th of November the day on which Larry was considered missing is a favourable day for him. If he was able to prove that then Larry couldn’t have died but he was missing somewhere because Larry couldn’t have died on his favourable day.
5-How did Chris want his father to help him in his marriage?
Chris loved Ann and had invited her to their house to propose marriage to her although he knew that his mother would not agree as Ann was Larry’ girlfriend. Chris told Joe that they were mistaken to leave Kate to believe that Larry was not dead as she was still waiting for him. He asked his father to help him to convince Kate that Larry was dead and that Chris could marry Ann. Although Joe didn’t like to face Kate with this but he agreed to help Chris as Chris told him if he didn’t help him he would marry Ann and go to live with her anywhere.
6-Do you think Joe Keller was a bad person ? Why ?
Joe Keller was not a bad man as he did what he did thinking that they will discover those *****s before fixing them in and he will have time to replace them with good ones. He did that because he didn’t want to lose his job to save it to his children but he didn’t mean any harm.
B: Comment on the following sentences:
1-“The whole neighborhood is depending on you. A policeman doesn’t ask questions.”
Joe said these words to Bert (a boy who thought that Joe was a policeman). Joe asked Bert to investigate the neighbourhood and tell him all the news so he would be a good investigator. Joe did that because he enjoyed knowing other people’s news. At the end of their conversation Joe told Bert to go and get him all the news and not to ask any question as a policeman doesn’t ask any questions.
2-“To you it is, and to me. But not to her. You can talk yourself blue in the face, but there is no body and there is no grave, so where are you? “
Joe said these words to Chris when they were talking about Chris’ marriage to Ann. Chris told Joe that they were mistaken when they left Kate to believe that Larry was dead and that they should tell her the truth. Joe told Chris that they could not face Kate. To Joe and Chris Larry has died but to Kate he was not dead because there was no evidence that he has died there was no body and no grave so she could not believe.
3-“We’ve made a terrible mistake with mother”
What was the problem from Chris’ point of view? And what was its solution? Did Joe agree with Chris?
From Chris’ point of view they were mistaken when they left Kate to believe that Larry was dead and that they should tell her the truth. Joe told Chris that they could not face Kate. To Joe and Chris Larry has died but to Kate he was not dead because there was no evidence that he has died there was no body and no grave so she could not believe.
4-“I‘ve been a good son too long, a good sucker. I am through with it.”
Chris said these words to Joe when they were discussing his marriage. Chris told Joe that he should help him to tell Kate that Larry was dead and he would not return so he could marry his girlfriend. When Joe told him it was impossible Chris told him that he would marry Ann and leave his parents and live away as he had been a good son too long. Joe promised to help him so that he won’t go away and leave his father’s job which Joe has done everything to keep for his sons.
