The door opened and a proud government officer walked in. The sewing was laid aside. The officer asked a few questions and Marya answered. 2- Why was Marya chosen to answer the questions? Because she knew the Russian language well and she was so clever. The early years 1- How many children were there in the family? Four children (Marya, two sisters and a little brothers). 2- What did Bronya try to do? Bronya did her best to take the place of the mother to give them mother’s love and comfort. The young man 1- Why did the young man fall in love with Marya? Because she could dance beautifully. She was good at playing games. She was clever and had good manners. She could write poetry as easily as she rode a horse. She was different from other girls he knew. 2- Why didn’t they get married? Because the family opposed the marriage and he had to give in to his family. Back to Warsaw 1- Why did Marya leave her position? She got up early in the morning to buy vegetables in the market, and quickly learned to prepare simple food that would cook itself during the hours they were away during the day. Men from the Paris newspapers came into their little home to take photographs of everything from the baby to the cat. The Nobel Prize 1- Why couldn’t they go to Sweden to receive the Prize? Because they were unable to go to Sweden to receive it. Both were far from well in health and both were too busy with their teaching and their laboratory. A great decision 1- Where did they go that afternoon? They went in the direction of the forest outside the city. Fame and children 1- How many children did they now have and what were their names? Two daughters. Irene and Eve. The first world war 1- What did Marie Curie do with the precious radium and why? She quickly took her gramme of precious radium and carried it to a safe place. Because Paris was in danger. 2- What was a “little Curie”? It was X-ray machine placed in motor car and was moved from place to place as needed. Trip to America 1- Why did Madame Curie go to America and who went with her? To receive the gramme of radium, a present from the people of America. Here two daughters went with her. 2- What was she expected to do in America? She was expected to make visits to universities, laboratories and mines. Gifts from America 1- What ceremony took place in Washington? The ceremony where the President gave her the radium in the name of the people of America. 2- What did she do before the ceremony? She told a lawyer to write a document declaring that the present would go to the laboratory after her death. The last years 1- Where did Madame Curie spend most of her last years? Most of the time she spent in the laboratory at the Institute of Paris. 2- When did she die and where was she buried? She died on July 4, 1934. She was buried in the grave beside her husband.
