mahrousahmed 23-04-2018, 06:17 PM I noticed that a lot of my colleagues and some of the outside books answered this sentence in a wrong way. The sentence is copied from workbook test practice number 6.
Crashing into a garden, a tree was knocked down by a car.
Some answered it was knocked----------knocked and this was extremely wrong, others answered it by alternating a car with a tree and this is definitely wrong. However, the right answer would be like this as the subject of the participle clause must be the same the subject of the main verb as it was mentioned in the student book page 107. .
Crashing into a garden, a tree was knocked down by a car.
Crashing into a garden, a car knocked down a tree.
And there is another sentence which they answered incorrectly
Each year, the teacher puts a year's..........of paper in the classroom cupboard.
a. value b. useful c. worth d. view
The answer is worth not value
Crashing into a garden, a tree was knocked by a car.
وبم ان اصل الجملة الاولى هو
A car crashed into a garden and knocked down a tree.
واضح جدا ان فاعل الجملة هو a car وليس a tree
وبالتالى فان الجملة تحل كالاتى:
Crashing into a garden, a tree was knocked down by a car
Crashing into a garden, a car knocked down a tree
abu ragab 23-04-2018, 08:00 PM Crashing into a garden, a tree was knocked down by a car.
Crashing into a garden, a car knocked down a tree
i agree with you but i think we can use hit-damaged-destroyed-crashed instead of knocked down.
mahrousahmed 23-04-2018, 08:58 PM Crashing into a garden, a tree was knocked down by a car.
Crashing into a garden, a car knocked down a tree
i agree with you but i think we can use hit-damaged-destroyed-crashed instead of knocked down.
dear colleague, knocked down is correct which means in Arabic Askatat اسقطت
mahrousahmed 23-04-2018, 09:06 PM أما بالنسبة لجملة كتاب التدريبات صفحة 97 الجملة رقم 4 فى السؤال الاول وهى:
Each year, the teacher puts a year's .........of paper in the classroom cupboard.
a- value b- useful c- worth d- view
الحل الصحيح هو worth لان:
a week's, a month's, a year's worth of something means an amount of something that lasts for a week, a month, a year ..
Mr. Bayoumy Ghreeb 23-04-2018, 11:56 PM And there is another sentence which they answered it incorrectly
How come
mahrousahmed 24-04-2018, 12:15 AM a spelling mistake or a slip of tongue
but what about the above
By the way how come should be followed by a question mark.
How come?
mr.hisham abo mohamed 24-04-2018, 09:36 AM What about these sentences
Waiting for John ,the kettle boiled
Pressing the button ,the lift moved to the fourth floor
The subject in these two sentences is not the same
mahrousahmed 24-04-2018, 02:26 PM What about these sentences
Waiting for John ,the kettle boiled
Pressing the button ,the lift moved to the fourth floor
The subject in these two sentences is not the same
Sure they are correct but I am talking about the cases mentioned in our school books but.....
The first sentence mainly was: While I was waiting for John , the kettle boiled. Here we are talking about a continuous action in the past and a simple one.
In the second sentence We pressed the button of the lift so I think the subject is the same. The sentence mainly was
When I pressed the button (of the lift) , the lift (it) moved to.....
mr.omar777 25-04-2018, 10:09 AM Waiting for John ,the kettle boiled
It is wrong to say such a sentence
It means the kettle was waiting for John
We should clarify our sentences
Thanks
mr.omar777 25-04-2018, 10:15 AM Pressing the button ,the lift moved to the fourth floor
It is wrong to say such a sentence
It means or implies the lift did the action itself
We should clarify our sentences
Thanks

كتاب المدرسه page 114
The sentence is correct Mr. Ashraf
WB. Practice Test 5 page 114 sentence number 6
6. I...........buy souvenirs for my family while I'm in London next week.
a. need to b. had to c. must d. have to
We use need to + verb to refer to actions that are or are not necessary (SB. page 102)
If we chose must, it would mean that the speaker is obliged or is very necessary to buy souvenirs for his family. If we chose must, what would the speaker do if he ran out of money or didn't have enough money? so I think need to is better than must.

mr.omar777 28-04-2018, 12:16 PM The choice of 'must' or 'need to' depends on how strongly you feel compelled to do something. 'must' is stronger
.In the Practice Test, 'need to' is the best answer. If we use 'must' it sounds as if the family have demanded presents. On p102, the example includes 'must' but the strength of feeling is clearer because of 'while we're here'. It means that there is only a small opportunity to buy the souvenirs[/B

[B]I agree with you,.
Do you think such a limited context is enough to choose correctly
ردهم ?You're welcome.
It is very difficult for enough context to be given to make the choice completely clear, especially in a test where students are just looking at a sentence. I think that there is enough information to choose correctly in these cases as long as the students follow the grammar rules in the Student's Book exactly. I agree that it is not easy though.
،thank so much and sorry for disturbing you
Thank you
No problem. You're welcome
