MODE OF
AUTONOMIC ACTION

Reciprocal action:
when one system is stimulated the other system is inhibited.
sympathetic stimulates all cardiac properties & parasympathetic
inhibits all cardiac properties.

Antagonistic action:
both systems are usually antagonistic in function
sympathetic : pupillary dilatation
parasympathetic : pupillary constriction

Complementary action
(a) act of grief : lacrimation (parasympathetic) emotions (sympathetic) z
(b) during ***ual intercourse : erection (para.) ejaculation (symp.) z

Same action
salivary secretion : parasympathetic produces watery secretion but poor in enzymes & sympathetic produce secretion but small in amount rich in enzymes

Single innervation
(a) Sympathetic only
1-blood vessels of skeletal muscles
2-blood vessels of the skin
3-dilator pupillae muscle
4-erector pili muscle
5-sweat glands
6-suprarenal medulla
7-ventricles of the heart
(b) parasympathetic only
1-glands of stomach
2-glands of pancreas
3-ciliary muscle
4-constrictor pupillae muscle
