كنا نتحدث عن أحداث غير عادية ... أحداث تبدو ان ليس لها تفسير طبيعي ... ومعظمنا تذكر احداها ... ومن بين الأشخاص الغرباء كان هناك رجل صغير ذا وجه أبيض قلق ... راقب كل متحدث بانتباه شديد ، ولكن لم يقل شيئا ... ورغبة في مشاركته في الحديث ، التفت إليه (دابني) وسأله إذا كان لديه تجربة يصفها أو قصة لا يستطيع تفسيرها .

فكر برهة ثم قال : حسنا ، ليست قصة بالمعنى العادي للكلمة . اعتقد دائما ان الحقيقة ليست فقط أكثر غرابة من القصص ولكنها أيضا أكثر تشويقا ... استطيع أن أقص عليكم حادثة حصلت لي شخصيا ... وانتهت بطريقة غريبة اليوم بعد الظهر.

طلبنا منه أن يبدأ.

قال : منذ سنة أو سنتين كنت أستأجر حجرة في شارع (أرموند العظيم) في منزل قديم ... كان المكان رطبا ... وكانت هناك رقع من الرطوبة على الحائط ... احدى هذه الرقع ، كما يحدث في الغالب ... كانت بالضبط مثل وجه إنسان ... وبينما كنت استلقي على الفراش في الصباح ... اعتدت أن أراقبها ... وأراقبها ... وتدريجيا بدأت أظن أنها حقيقة ... كشخص يشاركني المسكن ... والشيء الغريب أنه بينما الرقع الأخرى التي على الحائط تكبر وتتغير أشكالها ... لم تتغير هذه أبدا ... وبقيت بالضبط نفس الشكل .

أثناء وجودي هناك سقطت مريضا ولم يكن لدي طوال اليوم أي شيء افعله سوى القراءة والتفكير ... واخذ هذا الوجه يسيطر علي ... وأصبح أكثر حقيقة ووضوحا ، كان الشيء الرئيسي في تفكيري ليلا ونهارا ... كانت الأنف لها انحناءة ، وكان شكل الرأس غير عادي تماما ... وفي الحقيقة كان وجه رجل غير عادي تماما .... رجل من بين ألف رجل!

" حسنا تماثلت للشفاء ... ولكن الوجه كان يسيطر علي ... فوجدت نفسي أبحث في الشوارع عن شخص يشبه هذا ... وكنت متأكد أنه في مكان ما يجب أن يوجد الرجل الحقيقي ، كنت أريد أن أقابله ... لست أعرف لماذا ... كنت أعرف فقط أنني وهو كنا بطريقة ما متصلين بالقدر ...ذهبت إلى أماكن حيث يتجمع الرجال معا بأعداد كبيرة ... اجتماعات سياسية ، مباراة كرة القدم ، محطات السكة الحديد ... ولكن بلا جدوى ... ولم أدرك من قبل ، كما عرفت حينئذ كم يوجد عدد كثير من أوجه الرجال ، وكم يوجد أعداد قليلة ... كلهم مختلفون ... ومع ذلك ينتمون إلى مجموعات قليلة.

أصبح البحث مثل الجنون بالنسبة لي ... لقد أهملت كل شيء أخر ... كنت أقف على النواصي المزدحمة أراقب الجمع حتى بدأ الناس يظنون أنني مجنون ، وبدأت الشرطة تعرفني وتشك في ... لم أنظر أبدا إلى امرأة ... فقط الرجال.

مرر يده على وجهه بطريقة متعبة ، ثم استطرد : وأخيرا رأيته في تاكسي متجها شرقا على طول شارع (بيكاديللي) ... استدرت وجريت بجانب التاكسي لمسافة قصيرة ، ثم رأيت تاكسي فارغ قادما ، فصحت وأنا أقفز إلى الداخل : " اتبع هذا التاكسي" وتمكن السائق أن يجعله على مرمى البصر ... ووصلنا إلى محطة سكة حديد (شارنج كروس) ... واندفعت على الرصيف ... فوجدت الرجل مع سيدتين وفتاة صغيرة ... كانوا ذاهبين إلى فرنسا ...انتظرت محاولا الحديث معه ... ولكن بلا جدوى، سرعان ما انضم أصدقاء آخرين إلى حرامة ... وتحركوا معا إلى القطار .

وبسرعة اشتريت تذكرة إلى (فولكستون) آملا أن الحق به على السفينة قبل ان تبحر . وفي (فولكستون) صعد على ظهر المركب مع أصدقائه أمامي ... واختفوا في حجرة كبيرة خاصة . ومن الواضح أنه رجل ذا ثراء.

فشلت مرة ثانية ... ولكني صممت ان اعبر إلى فرنسا أيضا شاعرا بالتأكيد انه عندما تبدأ الرحلة سيترك السيدات ويخرج للتمشية ... كان معي نقودا تكفي لتذكرة إلى (بولون) ولكن لا شيء يستطيع أن يوقفني الآن ... اتخذت موضعي أمام بوابة وانتظرت ... وبعد نصف ساعة فتح الباب وخرج ومعه الفتاة الصغيرة . أخذ قلبي يدق بشدة لدرجة أنه خيل لي انه يهز السفينة ... لم يكن هناك خطأ بشأن الوجه كل خط كان بالمثل ... نظر إلى ثم أخذ يبتعد ... فشعرت أنه إما الآن أو للأبد .

قلت بعد تأكد : اعذرني ، ولكن هل تستطيع أن تعطيني كارت خاص بك ؟ لدي سبب مهم لأني أرغب أن أتصل بك."

بدت عليه الدهشة ، ولكن فعل ما طلبته منه ففي بطء شديد أخرج حافظته وسلمني كارتا خاصا به ثم أسرع مع الفتاة الصغيرة ... ومن الواضح أنه ظن انني رجل مجنون ... واعتبر انه من الأفضل أن يفعل ما طلبته.

أمسكت الكارت بشدة وأسرعت إلى ركن هادئ من السفينة وقرأت ... أظلمت الدنيا في عيني ، ودارت رأسي ... لأن هذه الكلمات كانت على الكارت .. (مستر ارموند وول) (ومعناه حائط شارع أرموند) وعنوان في بتسبرج في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ... لم أتذكر شيئا حتى وجدت نفسي في مستشفى في (بولون) ... رقدت هناك في حالة سيئة لمدة أسابيع ... وعدت فقط منذ شهر.

ثم سكت .

نظرنا إليه ونظر أحدنا إلى الآخر ... وانتظرنا ... كل الأحاديث الأخرى في هذا المساء كانت لا شيء بالمقارنة بقصة الرجل الصغير الشاحب.

ثم استطرد بعد لحظة أو أكثر : ثم رجعت إلى شارع (أرموند العظيم) ... وأخذت أعمل لأكتشف كل ما استطيع عن هذا الأمريكي ... كتبت إلى (بتسبرج) ... كتبت إلى رجال صحافة أمريكان ... قابلت أمريكان في لندن ... ولكن كل ما اكتشفته أنه مليونير ووالداه عاشا في لندن ولكن أين؟؟؟ لم أتلق إجابة لهذا السؤال.

وهكذا مر الوقت حتى أمس صباحا ... فقد أويت إلى الفراش متعبا عن المعتاد ... ونمت حتى وقت متأخر ... وعندما استيقظت كانت الشمس تتدفق في الحجرة . وكما أفعل دائما ... نظرت في الحال إلى الحائط ... حيث يوجد الوجه ... دعكت عيني ثم قفزت واقفا ... في الليلة الماضية كانت الصورة واضحة كما كانت ... والآن كانت باهتة جدا.

نهضت حزينا وخرجت ... كانت صحف المساء صدرت بالفعل ... وفي الحوادث رأيت (حادثة سيارة لمليونير) ... لابد أنكم جميعا قرأتم ذلك ... اشتريت صحيفة وقرأت في الحال ما عرفت أنني سأقرأه ... (مستر أرموند وول) المليونير من (بتسبرج) وشلته كانوا في سيارة من (سبيزيا) إلى (بيزا) عندما حدثت حادثة وانقلبت سيارتهم .... وحالة (مستر وول خطيرة) .

رجعت إلى حجرتي كأنني في حلم ... وجلست على الفراش انظر بعين لا ترى ، إلى الوجه الذي على الحائط ... وبينما كنت أنظر ... فجأة اختفى الوجه تماما . وفيما بعد اكتشفت أن (مستر وول) قد توفي في نفس اللحظة على ما اعتقد.

ومرة ثانية توقف عن الكلام.

قلنا : " شيء شاذ جدا ، شيء رائع تماما وهكذا وكنا نقصد هذا فعلا .

قال الغريب : أجل هناك ثلاثة أشياء غير عادية ، ثلاثة أشياء ظاهرة في قصتي ... أولها أنه من الممكن لعلامات الرطوبة في منزل للسكن في لندن ليس فقط أن يكون مثل وجه رجل في أمريكا ... ولكن أن يختفي عند موته سيكون من الصعب ، على العلم أن يفسر هذا ... والشيء الأخر أن يكون اسم هذا الرجل له علاقة بالمكان الذي ظهر فيه وجهه ، أليس كذلك؟

وافقناه ، وبدأت مناقشة بانفعال متزايد نهض خلالها الرجل الذي حكى القصة العجيبة ، وقال تصبحون على خير.

وعندما كان عند الباب سأله أحد الرفاق قبل أن يرحل ... ماذا يعتبر الشيء الشاذ (غير العادي) الثالث فيما يتعلق بهذه القصة المشوقة ، شرح قائلا أنت تعرف أنك قلت ثلاثة أشياء .

قال وهو يفتح الباب : أوه ، الشيء الثالث ... لقد نسيت هذا ... ان الشيء الثالث الشاذ (غير العادي) بشأن هذه القصة ... هو أنني قمت بتأليفها منذ حوالي نصف ساعة ، تصبحون على خير ، مرة ثانية .
