Summary of the story
- Augustus Pokewistle was a hopeless artist because he failed to sell any of his paintings.
He was lying in bed when a stranger visited him. He thought the stranger to be a doctor sent by a so-called friend to save him from his suffering, so he started to tell him the story. - Augustus said that when he was seven, he got a prize for a drawing of an animal though he intended to show sunset over London. His parents encouraged him to paint and provided him with pencils and paper. They gave him the chance to study under great painters.
- At the age of twenty-one, he started business as a painter of people. He painted eleven pictures of his face, but he failed to sell any of them. They are hung on the wall in the sitting room.
- Augustus failed in painting people, so he stopped painting people and turned to painting the country he painted nine views from the back window and seven from the front window but he sold nothing.
- TO get money, Augustus decided to forget his soul and drew pictures for newspapers but he got no money. He just got his drawings back. He said that his drawings for the newspapers were so funny that his cat laughed until it became ill.
- Augustus was disheartened and tried drawing for advertisements but he just received some samples then he decided to take to bed and never rise again but the stranger told him that he would make him rise because the stranger came from a furniture shop to take the bed back as it wasn’t paid for.

Summary of the story


-The narrator tells us that he has a good memory for faces and a weak one for names.
He never forgets a face he saw but his trouble was that he couldn’t remember names. His good memory for faces enabled him to do a lot of business .He always connected a face with a place. His wife told him that he could work as a reporter for newspapers .He said that he wouldn’t succeed because he would know that famous people but he wouldn’t remember their names. -The writer worked in London and lived at "Barfield" a village forty minutes from London by train and a mile from the railway station. A lot of people traveled to London most days. He knew people of Barfield by face but he couldn’t remember their names. His wife complained that he didn’t know the names of their neighbours.
-Once he was coming back from London on a late train. At first the train was crowded but two stops before Barfield station "at Ellingham
"there were only two in the carriage, the writer and a man from Barfield the writer told the stranger a lot about himself but the stranger talked very little the writer thought that the stranger lived in the cheap houses by the bus stop, so he couldn’t own a car.
-On reaching the station, the weather was very bad, so the writer offered to give him a lift to the village the man accepted the offer.
-On their way to Barfield, the man asked the writer to drop him off the writer was astonished but he slowed down and stopped. Suddenly the man hit the writer at the back of his head, took his gold watch, and stole the car, the new umbrella and his money. When the writer came to himself .He went to the police station to report the robbery. There, he saw the man’s picture on the wall outside and read under it "wanted for robbery with violence and attempted murder".
