1] What did Augustus Pokewhistle think the stranger was?
He thought the stranger was a doctor sent by some interfering so-called friend to save him from his suffering.
2] How did the stranger find Augustus?
He found him very weak, desperate and in low spirits
3] Why did Augustus think that any doctor could not help him?
Augustus was a born loser was suffering in body and soul. No one could change his fate or correct his attitude
4] Why did Augustus decide to take to bed?
He decided to take to bed because he failed to sell any of his paintings His life was meaningless and made him surrender to despair.
5] Why was the stranger not interested in listening to Augustus's story?
He was not interested because he was not a doctor who came to examine him. He came for a completely different reason. He came to take the bed which was not paid for. However, he had to wait until the painter had finished
6] How did Augustus try to impress the stranger?
He tried to show the stranger that he was a gifted painter who was unlucky. He said.
that he was a clever artist who had to take to bed at the height of his youth and talent .
7] On what occasion did Augustus win a prize?
He won a prize for drawing an animal when he was seven years old
8] What kind of paintings did Augustus make when he was twenty-one?
- He painted pictures of people.
9] Why did Augustus turn from painting people to painting the country?
Because nobody wanted the pictures of his face and nobody came to have their pictures painted.
10- Did Augustus succeed in painting the country? Why?
No, he did not because he painted all the views from the front and back windows of his room
11] How many paintings of the country did he make ? How many of them did he sell ?
He made nine paintings from the back window of his room and seven paintings from the front window. He sold none of them.
12] Augustus made several attempts to prove his skill as a painter, but they were not a
success. Discuss .
First, he started a business as a painter of people, but nobody seemed to want his painting . Then, he turned from painting people to painting the country around his home , but he could not sell any of them. After that, he drew funny pictures for the newspapers and for advertisements , but still without success.
13] Did Augustus have a wife and children? What could ‘ve happened If he had had a wife
and children
- He did not have a wife or children. If he had had, they would have been crying for bread
14] What sort of character was the stranger that visited Augustus?
He was stiff. He was uncaring a bout Augustus's miserable state. He was unwilling to listen to his complaints .But he was just kind enough to place Augustus carefully on the carpet before he took the bed away.
15] Why did Augustus feel desperate?
Because none of his paintings or drawings was sold.
16] What did Augustus decide to do when he failed to sell any of his paintings?
He decided to take to bed and never to rise again.
17] Do you think that Augustus was right when he described his friends as
Interfering and the public as uncaring ? Why ?
I don’t think he was right, because one should never be so desperate critical of other people or ungrateful to his friends .
18-Why could Augustus not sell any of his paintings, do you think?
Because from the age of seven he drew with one meaning and people saw in his drawings quite another thing. So, he developed into a self - centred depressed painter.
19- Do you think that the reader should feel any sympathy for Augustus
Pokewhistle , or not? Give reasons for your answer.
We should not feel any sympathy for him because he was not a gifted artist but a very much conceited person
20- How does Augustus Pokewhistle describe his friends? Do you think he would
be a nice person to have as a friend?
He describes them as interfering and 'so-called' friends. No.
