كلنا نعلم ان الصفات المنتهيه بy تصبح ier ,iest اذا كان الحرف الذى يسبق الyساكن
وبالنسبه ل ugly ايضا ذكر فى نسخه longman القديمه uglier/ugliest
ذكر فى English Grammar in use نفس الكلام ولكن ذكر الاتى
We prefer er with some two-syllable adjectives, especially adjectives ending in y
وكذلك A Comprehesive English Grammar
شكرا جزيلا لحضرتك

mr_tutor 27-10-2009, 12:20 PM Mr Essam,
Just wanna daw your attention to something happened at that time!! I myself discussed that point and highlighted it in my an article published in the forum . Unfortunately i received no reply from any of the memebers of the committee supervising the exam at that time. But a year later i was lucky enough to meet one of them and he said that it was a shameful mistake, so let it pass!1 as so many things must pass!!!
مستر/ عصام الجاويش 27-10-2009, 01:20 PM Thank you very much Mr. Tutor

Abbadi 30-11-2009, 09:31 PM Inequality : less
We can also talk about inequality by focusing on the ' lower ' end of the scale , using less ( than) or least.
The baby 's less ugly than you.
Inequality : more
To say that people, things etc are unequal in a particular way,
When we compare two descriptions ( saying that one is more suitable or accurate than another ) we use more ; comparative with – er are not possible.
He 's more lazy than stupid.
Note :
That this structure is used only to express abstract ideas.
He explained it all carefully but I was still none the wiser.
When a group only has two members we sometimes use the comparative instead of superlative
I 'll give you the bigger / biggest steak: I'm not very hungry.
( the ) is not used with superlative in predicative position or with superlative position or with superlative adverbs when we compare the same person, or the thing in different situations.
Compare
He 's nicestwhen he 's had a few drinks.
She works hardest when she 's doing something.
How do you like your coffee? "The stronger the better'
Note that in this structure, the word the is not really definite – it was originally a form of the demonstrative pronoun,
' by that much'.

انا دخلت اليوم فى منتدى انجليزى وتلقيت الاجابه التاليه
1- Nothing is uglier / more ugly than a street without trees.
2- Street children are a very serious problem.
اولا بالنسبة للجملتسن
nothing is more ugly than street without trees
الجملة صحيحة جدا لان اغلب الصفات التى تتكون من من مقطعين يتم التعامل معها بطريقتين هي
1- er \ est
2- more \ most
و هذا مذكور في كتب القواعد بشكل تفصيل
2- street children is a big problem
in my opinion is should be replaced with are as the subject is '' children '' and the verb thus must match it , so ''is'' is completely wrong
it can be acceptable if we say '' street children problem is a big one
اما بالنسبة لى
فانا اريد the address of the forum you have just mentioned

Abbadi 04-12-2009, 10:14 AM Always er/est: Most of one-syllable, e.g. small
Usually er/est: Two syllables ending in y, e.g. lucky
Either er/est Some of one syllable, e.g. clear, true
or more/most: Some of two syllables, e.g. narrow, common
Always more/most: One syllable ending in ed, e.g. pleased
Most of two syllables, e.g. careful, boring
Three or more syllables, e.g. expensive, magnificent

medo111 17-08-2011, 06:39 AM my dear friend mr Essam:
I think the sentence "street children is" is a correct sentence in English not are why? because when you translate you
translate meaning by meaning so the meaning is "the problem of street children is
2-uglier is correct and more ugly is correct too like easier and more easy
ahmedfawzy2111 21-08-2011, 11:42 PM street children is/are abig problem. Both are correct because we can say" my family is / are in the house. words like" team , council ,family , " are treated sing. and pl. as they consist of sub members.

He goes to Europe every two months . re-write using the word ( month)
salma hanem 03-09-2011, 07:03 PM he goes to Europe month after month
salma hanem 03-09-2011, 07:11 PM منين السؤال ده يا ندى؟
الصديق الصادوق 05-09-2011, 01:26 AM As a kind of confirmation
ugly is a two syllable word so it can be more ugly or uglier as it also ends with a consonant followed by y
And that's an exception for some words.
ps
y at the end of any word is a vowel that's why it is considered a two syllable word.
thnx.
alshamedaan 08-09-2011, 09:47 AM think of 'street children ' as a phenomenon ,so it can take a singular verb + ugly was a mistake that big people at that time left it without a hint .from1984 till 2011 nobody touched the mistake except the great man mr "essam" ..hope u r all right
alshamedaan 08-09-2011, 09:52 AM Please , i want the answer to this question... :
He goes to Europe every two months . re-write using the word ( month)
he goes to Europe every other month.

مستر/ احمد جابر 05-10-2011, 12:05 PM Nothing is uglier / more ugly than a street without trees
There is no semantic difference between the two ways of forming the comparison, the difference lies in the style / preference of the speaker.
Mr.3aneed 06-10-2011, 07:03 PM في رأيي الجملة الاولي صحيحة حيث يمكن استخدام more ويمكن اضافة er
الجملة الثانية يمكن اعتبار الحديث عن مشكلة اطفال الشوارع فالمشكلة مفرد:لذا نستخدم is
واذا كنا نقصد الاطفال فيجب استخدام الجمع are
والله اعلم
مستر/ احمد جابر 08-10-2011, 08:41 AM More and most with short adjectives
Sometimes more and most are used with short adjectives which usually take –er and –est. This usually happens when a comparative is not followed immediately by than.
The task is getting more and more hard. (OR The task is getting harder and harder.)
You are getting more and more young. (OR You are getting younger and younger.)
When we compare two descriptions of the same person or thing, we use more.
He is more lazy than stupid. (NOT He is lazier than stupid.)
