The country is Sudan. It was known as the Sudan in colonial times. There are several countries that had the article attached to their name in the past but which no longer do.

The official name is Sudan. The article was dropped when it became independent. The same is true of Ukraine, which was known as "the Ukraine" when it was part of the USSR. You can see the official names in the United Nations website, in the section of Member States.

Thanks Teachers
I would like to add Yemen too used to be called (the Yemen) and now the article 'the' is dropped.

As for Mr. Essam, thanks for your contribution. I kindly ask you to check the year your reference was published in....and if you have the teacher's guide for 2nd secondary, Practice test (3), Translation from Arabic to English, second sentence.

Thanks for all.

Dear Ms Rasha

That book was first published in 1988, and my second impression is also 1988. I had searched in many other modern resources before I finally resorted to this reference. It`s a bit old in comparison, but it includes all the mysteries that you`d like to find out about when other resources fail to do so.

In Practice Test 3, I found out it was SUDAN without the definite article.

Best Regards
