ولد تشارلز ديكينز في 7 فبراير 1812 في بلدة Portsmouth في انجلترا حيث كان الابن الثاني من 8 ابناء لأبيه الذي كان يعمل موظف في مكتب تابع للبحرية


و كان الروائي الإنجليزي الأوّل للعصر الفيكتوري، بالإضافة إلى انه مدافع إجتماعي نشيط

و أسلوب كتابة ديكينز معقّد وشاعري، مع لمسة هزلية قوية.كما في سخريته من الطبقية الارستقراطية البريطانية . و لكنه يبدو شعبي في أغلب الأحيان في اهتمامه بالأيتام كما في رواية oliver twist

و مات ديكينز في 9 يونيو 1870 بعد ان ترك تراث من الروايات التي لم تكن فقط احدي معالم الادب الانجليزي و لكنها ساهمت ايضاً في تشكيله و تطويره و كانت المرجع الاساسي لدراسة الادب و الحياة الثقافية في هذا العصر
