اعتقد انها ليست خطا . فهى بالتاكيد مرتبطة بالسياق الذى قبلها وبعدها فى النص الاصلى يعنى البراجراف كله حسب سياق القصة.

الجملة صحيحة و للتوضيح يمكن ان نكمل الجملة كالاتى
Poirot was travelling from Istanbul after he had finished working on a crime when he met an old friend on the plane.

can point out the unfamiliar sentences quickly

I think the sentence is correct becuase after is followed bt past perfect and proceeded by past conti the context of the sentence is correct.
