How do you show a player a yellow card when you don’t have one? Referee Peter Walton has the perfect idea of how to do that; use the invisible yellow card!
It is very rare but Walton forgot to take his cards to the field when he appeared on the pitch to officiate the game between Everton and Birmingham City on Wednesday. Every referee is required to go through a strict checklist before walking to the field.
The 51-year-old veteran referee was highly embarrassed when he realized rather too late that he had left his cards back in the dressing room. He had to do something at the time that he realized he didn’t have the cards because Birmingham City’s Jordon Mutch was waiting to be shown the yellow card. Well he managed to get the message across because after showing the imaginary yellow card to the player, there was no protest. The whole episode was captured on camera and it brought back the issue of Walton’s capability as a referee.
International referees are retired at the age of 49 years. However Walton won an appeal last year that allowed him to continue as a referee after passing that age. The latest incident would no doubt bring up the issue of his ability to continue as a referee again.
