Introduction

This story was written by Alan Maclean and Damien Tunnacliffe. It is a conflict between good and evil. Good overcomes evil at last. The Narrator of this story was Leila, the heroine of the story. It took place in the field of Archaeology. According to a UNESCO exchange programme, the Egyptian archaeologist, was going to Peru to join Dr Hafez who was doing excavation work there to find out the tomb of one of the Chimu Kings.
What Leila was taking to Dr Hafez :
Leila was taking Dr Hafez a small laser machine to be used for dating things in the excavated tombs here and details of a new technique developed by the department of archaeology in Cairo. Leila considered the new laser sort of secret and wanted to be the first to use it in their excavations in Peru.
Martin Lander:
- Leila flew to New York and then changed planes to Lima, the capital of Peru. On the plane, she met Martin Lander who said that he was an American mining engineer.
- Leila told Martin that she was going to do some kind of archaeological dig that was part of a UNESCO exchange programme.
- Why Leila took up archaeology :
- Leila took up archaeology because Dr Hafez, the old family friend, was speaking about his stories and digs ; so Leila was so interested that she decided to follow in his footsteps.
- Leila was a woman of principles as she decided not to study under the supervision of Dr Hafez in Cairo and did her degree in Rome, at the Italian Institute of Archaeology because people might think he was giving a special treatment. Leila was experienced, as she worked with Dr Hafez before in the Valley of the Nobles in Luxor where they discovered a tomb which had wonderful paintings of birds and animals on the walls. -Leila suspected Martin as he asked her more questions and when
she was half asleep, he tried to look through the papers in the pocket in the seat in front of her.
• Similarities between the Incas and the ancient Egyptians :
The Incas and the Ancient Egyptians put gold and silver objects beside the bodies of their kinds, and they dressed them in beautiful clothes. They put gold masks on their faces. They put gold figures of animals in their tombs and they put food and drink beside them.
• Differences between the Incas and the ancient Egyptians :
Only the Incas killed women and servants and buried them with the kings.
- At important festivals, the Incas dressed the mummified bodies of their kings in fine clothes and carried them through the streets
- Leila 's Choice & The Project
- Dr Hafez chose Leila to be in charge of one team with three local archaeologists as he trusted her and he wanted someone who could understand him. If the UNESCO support the excavation programme the following year.
- The Incas :
- -The Incas were tough because they used to live at high altitudes on tops of the Andes. -Though the Incas didn't have any kind of writing, they controlled a huge empire. -The Incas conquered the Chimu who were famous for their gold silver work. The Incas invaded the Chimu but allowed their kings to rule only if they were loyal to the Incas. The Incase used to sacrifice children to please the gods. Pablo who worked for the Peruvian Ministry of Culture told Leila that the Peruvian heritage was as valuable as the Egyptian heritage. So, it should be kept Inside the country and protected from thieves. In fact, he wasn't truthful : He betrayed his country when he revealed the archaeological to Martin and helped him to steal the mask of gold for money
- •Amalia' s pretence and Leila's defence :
- Amalia thought that Leila was in Peru because Dr Hafez was a friend of her family. Leila defended herself against Amalia's idea saying that she was an experienced archaeologist and her experience would be useful in the Peruvian excavation as she and Dr Hafez had excavated the tomb of Sennofer in the Valley of the Nobles in Egypt. -Leila was worried that Amalia was so unfriendly towards her, Leila thought it might be because she was Dr Hafez's assistant and was in charge of her team
- •Dr Hafez's opinion of Amalia :
- Dr Hafez told Leila that Amalia would get along better with her when they would start working together as they were the same age and they were both archaeologists.
- Dr Hafez trusted Amalia and considered her a good archaeologist who had done a lot of good work on the excavation and who knew a lot about the tombs.
- •Lander was proved to be a liar:
- When Leila logged on to the internet to find out about United Mining, she knew that the company's operation in Peru had stopped years before. This made her realise that Lander was telling her a lie when he said that he was working for United Mining, a company which had future plans of work in Cuzco.

•The human skeleton :

- The four explorers (Dr Hafez, Leila, Amalia and Ramon) found the skeleton of a man in a setting position. They gasped when they saw the body because the skull had a big ***** across it.
- Dr Hafez said that the man night have been killed, and said that the skull could have broken by falling rocks. With the help of the laser machine, Dr Hafez was able to date the piece of cloth that was found beside they body. •Leila's discovery of a llama : Leila discovered a gold figure of a llama. It was an important discovery as the tomb would likely turn out to be royal. Leila walked over to the tomb, she found the simple door over the tomb wall not completely closed and there was a torch light coming from inside the tomb. She went down the tomb and found Martin.
- •Face to face with Martin Lander:
-Leila accused Martin that he was a thief but he said that he was a collector who appreciated fine things.
- Lander climbed the ladder and pulled it up behind him, closed the door and disappeared. He trapped her inside the tomb. Leila spent a terrible night and had a dreadful dream in the tomb.
- Dr Hafez called the police who thought that Martin couldn't be arrested as he used a false name and a false passport.
- •The discovery of the gold mask
- Leila discovered the Gold Mask. It was like the face of the sun and it proved that the cave was royal tomb. Pablo decided to put the mask in the safe to protect it from theft but the next morning it was stolen.

•Leila was suspected of theft

- The police found that the safe wasn't broken into, it was opened by a key. Leila was accused of stealing a little gold rabbit as it was found among her work clothes. She was put in a police cell though she was treated with respect.
- Amalia's jealousy : -
- Amalia was the person who had put the gold figure in Leila's clothes to raise doubts about her. Amalia was angry and jealous of Leila who was put in charge of the excavating team and who discovered the gold mask
- Amalia's clear conscience :
She went to the police station and confessed that she had put the gold rabbit among Leila's clothes and so as a result Leila was set free. Amalia 's remorse.تانيب الضمير
Amalia and Leila had an accident:
- Amalia and Leila decided to go to Acomayo to catch Lander there, but they had an accident. Amalia was in great pain and couldn't move because she had broken her leg. Leila had pains in her legs and arms and there was a cut on her face. As Leila had trained in first aid she was able to get Amalia out of the car, covered her with a blanket and made her a splint.
- \Lander was deceitful :
- Amalia told Leila that Martin deceived her father when he persuaded her father to put up some money for a new silver mine that Martin said he had found and as a result her father lost all his money as there was no mine.
- The villager's help : -
- Leila went to the nearest village to get help. The village people gave her a hot drink and some leaves to chew. The doctor said that Amalia's condition was serious so she should be taken to the hospital in CUZCO by helicopter. Dr Hafez was suspicious of Pablo because Pablo told him on the day they found the gold mask, he was excited and was so tired that he left the key of the safe in the hut by mistake and hence, someone might have climbed through the open window and opened the safe with the keys.
- •Pablo's admission :
- Pablo confessed* that he worked with Martin as he offered him a lot of money for the gold mask when Dr Hafez told him that Lander was arrested. He told Dr Hafez how hard his life was and how little money he was paid. He had a sick child and he needed to pay for expensive medicines.
•A trap to catch Lander :
- As Pablo had an appointment with Lander that day, Leila suggested to set a trap by following Pablo and catching Lander. Dr Hafez, Roman and Leila followed Martin who was driving a small truck to the far side of the airport.
- •Leila's hindrance to Martin's escape :
Martin got out of the truck to open the gate. Leila got into it and drove at Martin who got into a small engine plane. Leila drove hard at the plane and knocked it into its side. Martin was knocked out. The police found the gold mask and the other things Martin had stolen. •Leila's gratitude
Leila went to the village on the road to Acomayo to thank the people who had helped her to save Amalia. Leila wanted to show Dr Hafez a pattern of stone blocks that looked like the pattern of rocks at the Chimu kings's tomb. She meant that she had discovered a new site. Amaila would lead the team excavating the new site.
•Leila's return to Egypt: -
Leila came back to Egypt. At the airport, there were a lot of photographers to take photographs of Leila who had made important archaeological discoveries, caught a thief .
