This is especially true of sentences that look like questions. They might not be asking for information but serve another function, such as requesting help, offering something, making a suggestion, or apologizing. Look at these sentences. They all look like questions, but only the first one is really a question that is asking for information. (1) Do you like cake? (This is a real question asking for information.) (2) Would you like (some) cake? (This is offering something to someone.) (3) Can you post this letter for me? (This is requesting that someone do something.) (4) Why don't you see the doctor about your arm? (This is making a suggestion.) (5) Would you turn the volume down on the TV, please? (This is politely requesting that someone do something.) (6) Would you shut up? (This is rudely requesting that someone do something.) Similarly, a sentence can look like a factual statement but function as something else. (7) The doctor's clinic is open from 3 to 8 p.m. (This is a statement of fact. In some contexts it could be a suggestion that someone go to the doctor.) (8) You could borrow some money from your brother. (This is making a suggestion.) (9) That's a great idea! (This is expressing approval.) (10) I don't think that's a very good idea. (This is expressing disagreement.) At the top of the first page of each unit of the SB, there is an Objectives Box which tells you what functions are being taught in that unit. In Sec 2, you will generally find useful phrases for the given functions on the Critical Thinking or Communications page of each unit. In Sec 3, the phrases are usually given in a box on the Communications page of each unit. To answer the question, you have to understand what the speakers in the dialogues are doing with the language. Best Regards |
