2- Main points:
&The Sydney Opera House is called “A Symphony in Concrete” because it has no like in harmonies planning and construction . It is like a musical composition existing in material from that can be touched and seen .
&It is unique in its shape and constructions. It is a building of enormous technical interest to architects and engineers because the roofs of such size and with bold curve have never been built before. It stands out against towering skyscrapers, the blue water of the harbour and the grayness of the great Sydney Bridge. It has become Australia’s biggest tourist attraction.
&Jorn Utzon, a thirty - eight - year - old Dan , won the competition that was organized by the state government with a very imaginative and daring design of building that looked like a beautiful concrete butterfly .
&The engineering firm had to face unusual technical problems in building the podium. About seven hundred concrete piers had to be sunk to a depth of thirteen metres in Sydney Harbour to support the building. But the most unusual technical problem was the roof. Jorn Utzon suggested to give up the proposed system. Instead, he suggested building the roof in segments . This idea came to him when he was peeling an orange one day. Utzon had disagreements with many engineers and government officials. There had been a delay of professional fees. So, he resigned on February 28 / 1966 . Today, in spite of its enormous costs, most Australian are extremely proud of their Opera House .
& Utzon was deeply influenced by the dramatic position of the Castle of Ellsinore, the setting of Shakespeare’s play "Hamlet" as he used to play on the castle walls as a child. He also was interested in the architecture of the ancient Mayan Temples in Mexico. After Jorn Utzon’s resignation before the project was finished, he left Australia and returned home. Sadly he demanded that his name board should be taken down.
&Jorn Utzon won a half dozen Danish competitions. At the age of 38, he won the Sydney Opera House competition. His name became internationally known. Later, while he was working in Sydney, he won another international competition for a theatre in Zurich, Switzerland .
&The Sydney Opera House is a work of art in its sight and a home for the arts that is among the best in the world. It was built under the pressure of leading citizens who complained of not having a modern center for the arts .
&Jorn Utzon’s life in Sydney was not a happy one. Although he was elected a fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, he had many disagreements with engineers and officials .
