Useful Websites.

http://www.pppst.com/index.html (http://www.pppst.com/index.html)
This is a fantastic website full of ready made Powerpoints, covering lots of topics. You will find lots of resources to use in literacy and numeracy classes, and there are lots of good Powerpoints that can be used in Skills for Independent Living classes, to do with social issues. If you go to the box marked ‘topics and themes’ it gives you a list of hundreds, if not thousands of things covered in the Powerpoints.

http://www.educationict.org.uk/literacy/index.htm (http://www.educationict.org.uk/literacy/index.htm)
This is a good literacy website, with lots of worksheets that can be adapted to suit the level of your learners. The fourth grade section has some useful resources for skimming and scanning for example. There is also some Smartboard stuff but I haven’t checked this out yet.

http://www.internet4classrooms.com/grade_level_help.htm (http://www.internet4classrooms.com/grade_level_help.htm)
Great website with lots of literacy, numeracy and basic skills (e.g. number / colour recognition) resources. The site is graded in sections, from kindergarten to eighth grade, so there is a lot to suit every level. It’s an American site but there are lots of English resources on here. There are loads of interactive quizzes and activities, and lots of worksheets to complement the activities. In fact, on just the eighth grade literacy section there are hundreds of resources!

http://www.citycol.com/basic_skills/ (http://www.citycol.com/basic_skills/)
I’m sure we have all seen this site, but it is a good one for literacy and numeracy resources anyway. Go to the site guide on this page and it will lead you to the specific resources. It’s aimed directly at adults, and even though some of the interactive activities and quizzes are a bit bland, they are still worth a go.

http://www.usingenglish.com/ (http://www.usingenglish.com/)
Good literacy site, with resources from Entry Level to Level 2. The worksheets again are a bit plain, but they are useful for quick revision tasks / tests and can be put on the Smartboard. The site looks a bit boring when you first go to it, but there are some excellent resources to be found. I’ve found that the pdf versions of worksheets are easier on the eye. http://www.usingenglish.com/lesson-plans.html (http://www.usingenglish.com/lesson-plans.html) (easiest part of the site).

http://www.writing-kit.com/apostrophes/index.html (http://www.writing-kit.com/apostrophes/index.html)
This is a complete interactive lesson that is really good fun about the use of apostrophes. It also has sound so will speak its way through the presentation. To consolidate what the students have learned, there is also an interactive quiz which can be found at http://www.writing-kit.com/ApConsol/index.html (http://www.writing-kit.com/ApConsol/index.html) . Great extension work, which includes lots of real-life examples of apostrophe, can be found at http://www.apostrophe.org.uk/index.htm (http://www.apostrophe.org.uk/index.htm)

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/eng/index-new.htm (http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/eng/index-new.htm)
Lots of literacy, numeracy and skills for independent living resources can be found on this website. Many are interactive and there are lots of worksheets to download.

http://www.higherbebington.wirral.sch.uk/games.html (http://www.higherbebington.wirral.sch.uk/games.html)
Numeracy, literacy and ICT resources can be found on this site. Loads of interactive games for all levels. There are also video explanations on many topics to show your students. There are many links to other sites also.

http://www.education.com/ (http://www.education.com/)
This is a good website with literacy and numeracy resources. It is American, so you may need to be careful if you are using the literacy part of the site. On the home page, type in ‘worksheets’ in the search bar at the top of the page. This will list all the worksheets and you can then filter the results. There will also be a link for activities.

http://www.alresources.com (http://www.alresources.com/)
This website gives you links to many different, interactive numeracy and literacy resources. It is extremely easy to navigate. There are things like cash machine simulators and colourful worksheets. It is designed specifically for adults. If you go to the home page, there are lots of other links connected with resources for students with mental health issues and dyslexia.

http://www.agendaweb.org/ (http://www.agendaweb.org/)
This site has lots and lots of literacy exercises. I haven’t had chance to check them all out, but there are resources such as interactive activities where the learner has to fill in missing words and then the computer reads it back to them so they can hear if what they have written is correct. The site is a little difficult to navigate but there are some real gems to be found if you have the patience to trawl through the hundreds of examples!

http://sadlier-oxford.com/phonics/student.cfm (http://sadlier-oxford.com/phonics/student.cfm)
Great literacy and numeracy site, again with lots of interactive activities. There is a game on here where students have to type in plurals of words in order to fill a fish tank with fish with every correct answer. Sounds childish, but trust me, the words that it gives you to pluralise aren’t all that simple!

http://www.okaloosa.k12.fl.us/south/shared_pages/ss_studentgames.htm#stuvoc (http://www.okaloosa.k12.fl.us/south/shared_pages/ss_studentgames.htm#stuvoc)
Long address, I know, but really worth it because of all the easy to use links on this page.

http://www.quia.com/pages/sequencingfun.html (http://www.quia.com/pages/sequencingfun.html)
I found this page when I was looking for things to do with sequencing and there are lots of examples on here, which makes it easier than having to create them yourself.

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ (http://www.crickweb.co.uk/)
This is a brilliant website with lots and lots of interactive activities. It is useful in Entry Level classes and has games connected with labelling fruit and vegetables, naming body parts, creating stories etc and as a lot of them are drag and drop activities then they are great for using on the Smart board and for encouraging students to come to the front to increase confidence when using the Smart board. There are things though that may suit higher ability students, such as using compound words and verbs. There are numeracy and literacy resources on this site.

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/15.cfm?s=15&p=250,index (http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/15.cfm?s=15&p=250,index)
Again, lots of interactive literacy and numeracy resources. Easy to use website too.

http://www.talent.ac.uk/londononline/welcome/home/index.htm (http://www.talent.ac.uk/londononline/welcome/home/index.htm)
Aimed at ESOL students, this website has many resources connected with every day living, such as health, shopping, asking for directions etc.

http://manufacturing.stanford.edu/ (http://manufacturing.stanford.edu/)
This is a website that can be used for speaking and listening exercises. The site tells you how many things are made like jelly beans, chocolate, dolls and crayons. If you go to the online tour section you can take a tour of various factories with lots of video footage, which could lead to comprehension exercises (if you have time to create them!).

http://www.quornfoodquest.co.uk/index.htm (http://www.quornfoodquest.co.uk/index.htm)
This website teaches about healthy eating (useful for Skills for Independent Living). There are 5 modules from food preparation to where food comes from, all with interactive whiteboard activities, worksheets, activities and quizzes.

www.topmarks.co.uk (http://www.topmarks.co.uk/)
Really easy website to navigate around. There are lots of subjects on offer on here, and links to lots of other just as easy websites. There are literally hundreds of interactive activities, and you have the option to type in exactly what you are looking for.

http://www.widgit.com/resources/index.htm (http://www.widgit.com/resources/index.htm)
Topics include BSL, weather, dressing and grooming, out in the community, healthy eating, Shakespeare, occupations and loads more. Some of the stuff you have to pay for, but there are a few things on this site to download for free. You need to look out for the free resources that are in pdf format.

http://pagesperso-orange.fr/absolutenglish-972/notes/uscivi/resourcepages_themes_alph.htm (http://pagesperso-orange.fr/absolutenglish-972/notes/uscivi/resourcepages_themes_alph.htm)
Lots of literacy resources – including exercises, interactive games etc. A good selection of topics covered. I especially liked the ‘mysteries’ section and the ‘mobile phones’ section.

http://www.helpkidzlearn.com/index.html (http://www.helpkidzlearn.com/index.html)
This is a brilliant website. It is directed at children, but I found an activity on here that was an interactive test to test the students’ knowledge of BSL which was great because I had taught that in my class last week. There are interactive activities, such as making mosaics, following instructions, checking knowledge of everyday activities such as how to make a baked potato. The site is really, really easy to use, and it is all singing and all dancing.

http://home.netlinc.org.uk/ContentStore/__Public/Documents/0019400/19478/cdrom/East%20Midlands/victorian/eraIndex.htm (http://home.netlinc.org.uk/ContentStore/__Public/Documents/0019400/19478/cdrom/East%20Midlands/victorian/eraIndex.htm)

If you are teaching about newspapers, this is a great site. You can click on your geographical area to find out things that have happened throughout history. I clicked on Manchester and the Victorian era. You then choose a headline and it takes you to an interactive activity where you can ‘interview’ people connected with your story and you have to edit and write your newspaper article. The blurb on the site says: ‘Explore historical newspapers packed with true stories. Find out about grim and gruesome facts. Interview famous characters from history. Write your own front page stories. Discover hidden surprises including sound and film.’
http://www.learnanytime.co.uk (http://www.learnanytime.co.uk/)

These are good pictures to put on the Smart Board as fillers. (You can zoom into them as well.) They are pictures and the students have to name various items. The picture is very busy and has lots of things happening in it. There is one connected with movies, one connected with cities and a couple connected with bands. E.g one picture has a picture of a tub of Philadelphia cheese on the floor hence the film ‘Philadelphia’. THIS SITE SHOULD BE USED WITH DISCRETION AND IS ONLY REALLY SUITABLE FOR MATURE LEARNERS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE BAND ONE YOU WILL SEE WHY. Also, you don’t get answers but a quick scour on Google will bring the answers up from kind people who have decided to publish them.

http://www.totalcommunication.org.uk/makaton-signing.html (http://www.totalcommunication.org.uk/makaton-signing.html)
Makaton Sign Demos. This is a really good site that I used with a learner who could not communicate verbally. To ensure she could participate in every lesson I set her SMART targets which meant she had to demonstrate at least one sign in every session at the front of her class. If I chose a word that she didn’t know then we could watch the short video demonstration and she would learn a new sign. If I chose one she did know then I could check it using the online video. Each demonstration video only lasts a matter of a couple of seconds. As well as ensuring the learner was meeting her targets, the rest of the class learned on a weekly basis a way in which they could communicate with this student.
