when Fritz asked if
we could use it for a hunting trip, he happily agreed.

او we

Ayman M.Ebrahim 06-09-2012, 06:50 PM
Essam ABDOU 06-09-2012, 08:53 PM Sorry sirs,
HE is correct. It refers to Fritz von Tarlenheim. His relative (an uncle) owns the country house and that`s why he (Fritz) was asked if they could use it (to be near the real king`s prison in the castle of Zenda in a plan to save him) and he (Fritz) agreed.

Fritz was asked if they could use it
when Fritz asked if we could use it for a hunting trip
Essam ABDOU 06-09-2012, 09:44 PM You`re right about the active - I read it 'was asked'
In that case "He" is also correct and it refers to Fritz`s relative, not Rudolf

About eight kilometres from Zenda, on the opposite side of the town to
where the castle stands, there is a leafy wood on a low hill. On top of the
hill is a large, modem country house called Tarlenheim which belongs to a
relative of Fritz. He does not often visit the house, so when Fritz asked if
we could use it for a hunting trip, he happily agreed

Essam ABDOU 06-09-2012, 10:40 PM Firstly, I didn`t look at any other edition in dealing with these sentences.
Secondly: step by step
- Who has a country house?
- Who doesn`t often visit the house?
- Who would Fritz ask to take permission?
- Who agreed?
The answer to all these questions is HE = Fritz`s relative
If still not convinced,
What does He in "He does not often visit the house" refer to?
Surely to the nearest person, relative of Fritz - not Fritz himself
What does He in "He happily agreed" refer to?
Also, the answer to both questions is HE = Fritz`s relative
Best Regards

Dear Mr. Ahmed,
Thank you for the discussion.
When I said "you`re right", it meant I was wrong. I read it in the passive at first.
Anyway, what we miss are discussions like these based on mutual respect, with knowledge and also competition. We need to revive these real discussions which were a common feature of this forum a few years ago. We also need EVERYONE to participate. Have a blessed Friday!
Best Regards
