• She did degree in Rome, at the Italian Institute of Archaeology. She was chosen by Dr Hafez to work with him in Peru. She was chosen by Dr Hafez to be in charge of a team. She was grateful to helpful people. She was helpful. She was ambitious. She was a good observer. She was a successful archaeologist.

** Leila El Assaby :
Leila is indeed the horoine of the story. She has played the most important part in the discovery of the gold mask, in catching Martin Lander, the thief and in discovering a new Inca site.
** Leila’s Education:
Leila got interested in archaeology because when she was young, she used to love listening to Dr Hafez who spoke about his excavations and showed them pictures of things he had found. She did her degree in Rome at the Italian Institute of Archaeology. She didn’t study in Cairo university for fear that people might think Dr Hafez, the friend of her family, was giving her special treatment.
** Leila’s achievements before going to Peru:
Leila was a research assistant at the University of Cairo. Before going to Peru, she worked with Dr Hafez in Luxor in the valley of the Nobles. They excavated the tomb of Sennofer. It was her first dig. The tomb had wonderful of birds and animals on the walls. The colours were as bright as if they had been painted yesterday.
** Laila’s work in Peru:
Leila’s work was part of a UNESCO exchange programme. Two Egyptians Dr Hafez and Leila were digging up ancient Inca tombs. Their site was on top of a rocky hill called the “hill of the king” in the Inca language. It was near Quenco. She was the assistant of Dr Hafez who was responsible for the project. She was in charge of a team of three native archaeologists.

** Leila’s Achievements in Peru:
The first thing Leila found was a gold figure of a llama with a square head and a thick tail. It meant that the tomb was of somebody important but not necessarily a king. Later on, she discovered a mask of gold. It shone with a lovely golden colour. It was a king’s mask. It was like the face of the sun. this meant it was a royal tomb. When Dr Hafez and Leila went to the village on the road to Acomayo, she showed him the pattern of stone blocks at the Chimu king’s tomb at the mountain side. Dr Hafez sent a team to that place. They believed it was really an inca site. Through her cleverness, she was able to catch the thief Martin Lander who had stolen the gold mask and some valuable artifacts. When he got into the plane aiming at escaping, she drove the truck at the plane and his its side and knocked it. He knocked out and was caught by the police later on.
** Leila’s Love of Adventure:
As Leila was motivated by the spirit of adventure, she chose the career of archaeologist. This job required her to be away from home, to work under the scorching sun of the desert or uninhabited areas. Tombs of the dead have their awe. People are usually reluctant to get into them, let alone a young girl who leaves her homeland and travels for thousands of miles and gets into them. Leila set off on the biggest adventure of her life as she herself said. She went to Peru a far-off place to get into tombs and try to find valuable Inca treasures.
It was the spirit of adventure that drove her to go back to the tomb and descend to face Martin Lander boldly who imprisoned her with the dead. She also agreed to go with Amalia to catch Lander.
It was the spirit of adventure that made her think of the plane to get into the truck and hit Lander’s plane.
** Leila’s Bravery:
Though bravery is closely related to adventure, it has shown itself on its own with Leila. She agreed to travel on her own thousands of miles away from home. When she was in the tomb facing Martin Lander, she knew he was ready to fight. However, she never hesited to call a spade a spade and confronted him with the fact that he was a thief. She was not frightened and repeated the accusation. She was brave enough to agree to accompany Amalia to catch Lander with no protection at all if anything popped up. She also was brave when she went on her own in a place she didn’t know to try to find help for Amalia when her car crashed in the mountains. The bravest deed was when she acted to catch Lander. She jumped into the truck and drove as hard as she could at the plane and prevented him from running away.
** A Girl of Principles:
Leila was a girl of principles. She studied archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology in Italy in order not to study with Dr Hafez who was a friend of her family. People might think he was giving her special treatment. When she met Martin Lander and talked to him about Dr Hafez’s work, decided not to talk too much to him feeling that he was keen on getting information from her. She refused to tell him exactly where their site of excavation was. One of their good principles was her honesty. She was honest to her work and to her friends. She believed that all that was found in the tombs belonged to Peruvian people and had to be kept in museums for the people to see. She was honest to Dr Hafez when she obediently carried out his orders to supervise the team although she was reluctant to do so. She was honest to Amalia when she refused to act upon Amalia’s advice and went to find somebody to help Amalia.
** Quotations Said by Leila :

4- “Dr. Hafez is looking for a king’s tomb.
5- “I saw the man looking through the pocket in the seat in front of me”
6- Yes, they asked me about it in customs’
7- So there were some differences between what the Incas did what the Ancient Egyptian did.
8- Of course I’m happy to be working with Dr Hafez. I’ve worked with him before. But don’t get the wrong idea I’m here because I’m on experience would be useful in this excavation.
9- “I did some work on the Incas when I was studying at the Italian Institute of archaeology.”
10- I know you are right. May be it’s because I’m your assistant or may be it is because she is in my team. There was no one in charge until I arrived.
11- Aren’t we going to explore the tomb?
12- But the skull could have been broken by some falling rocks, couldn’t it?
13- “One of the archaeologist here obviously doesn’t like me”
14- she isn’t very friend towards me.
15- Do you think it mightn’t be a royal tomb.
16- You can’t. it is wrong you are stealing. This is an import excavation, important for Peru and for the world.
17- I remembered what I had said to Lander on the plane. I had been careless perhaps I was responsible for him finding the clue it before.
18- I’d like to go back to the village on the road to Acomayo I’d like to thank the village people who saved Amalia.
