Specifications for Third Year Secondary Final Exam
مواصفات الامتحان النهائي للصف الثالث الثانوي للعام الحالي. )مدة الامتحان: ثلاث ساعات(
A. Vocabulary and Structure (15 marks)
1. Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d: (15 marks)
Thirty (30) multiple choice items, with FOUR (4) options each (15 Vocabulary and 15 Structure), based on the Set Books are provided. (HALF a mark each)
B. Reading Comprehension (17 marks)
2. Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (10 marks)
An unseen text of about 140-180 words is provided. This may be a story, a factual text, an e-mail or a dialogue. Most vocabulary and all structures should be from the Set Books. The students are asked to answer SIX (6) multiple-choice questions with FOUR (4) options each and FOUR (4) open-ended questions.
These questions MUST test each of the following reading comprehension skills:
- extracting information.
- giving the main idea.
- understanding reference (pronoun reference).
- guessing the meaning of vocabulary in context.
- answering a critical thinking question (giving an opinion, evaluating an idea, etc.)
- expressing personal opinions, (e.g. Do you think….? Why/Why not?)
- prediction. (ONE mark each)
The Novel (The Prisoner of Zenda)
3. a. Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d: (4 marks)
Students are asked to answer Four (4) multiple choice items, with FOUR (4) options each. (ONE mark each) b. Answer TWO (2) of the following questions: (3 marks)
A set of Three (3) varied open-ended questions (critical thinking), based on the reading material in the Set Book of (The Prisoner of Zenda), are provided. Students are asked to answer only TWO (2) questions.
(ONE and HALF a mark each)
C. Writing (18 marks)
4. Finish the following dialogue: (6 marks)
A dialogue with SIX (6) deletions is provided. (Three (3) stimuli &Three (3) responses). The topic of the dialogue should be related to the student's everyday life, interests, hobbies, events and so on… . The situation in which the dialogue takes place is described briefly but clearly. The students are required to fill in the deletions with the appropriate language forms. (ONE mark each)
5. Write a paragraph of about ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY (120) words on ONE (1) of the following: (7 marks)
The students are asked to write a paragraph of about ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY(120) words on ONE (1) of the TWO (2) given topics appealing to their age, interests, likes, aspiration, etc. The title of the paragraph should be self-explanatory (i.e. easy to understand). No guidance is given. (or)
5. Write an e-mail to ………: (7 marks)
The students are asked to write an e-mail of about ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY (120) words on ONE (1) of the TWO (2) given topics. The topic of the e-mail should be self-explanatory (i.e. easy to understand). The name of the sender, the addressee and the subject should be provided.
(TWO marks for format &FIVE marks for content)
6. A. Translate into Arabic. (3 marks)
TWO (2) separate, short, meaningful sentences, of about 12-14 words each, are provided. Students are asked to translate them from English into Arabic.
B. Translate one (1) sentence only into English. (2 marks)
TWO (2) meaningful sentence, of about TWELVE (12) words each, are provided. Students are asked to translate ONLY ONE of them from Arabic into English. The translation question aims at testing the students' awareness of the areas of similarity and difference between the mother tongue and the target language. Vocabulary and structure should be from the language component presented in the Set Books.

Total ( 50 marks )
