attach- tie

tie - attach: What is the full difference between them?
Sender MIDORED4 Position Teacher

To tie is “to fasten things together or hold them in a particular position using a piece of string, rope etc.” Please see more
here.
To attach is “to fasten or connect one object to another.” Please see more here.
You tie things with a string or rope — which can be untied or cut. You might tie something to another object — such as tie a horse to a fence or tie a lid on a box. Or you fasten something in a position — such as tie a string around your finger or a towel around your waist.
You attach things — connect one object to another — with string, rope, chain, cellotape, glue, nails, screws, etc.

The picture was ______ to the wall and I could not take it off. a. situated b. tied c. attached d. placed
Sender Waleed El_ Sayed Position Teacher The answer is (c) attached.
It would be unusual to tie a picture to a wall -- you would have to have a nail or ring fixed to the wall, and tie the picture to that. And if it were tied, you could just untie it, so there would be no problem with taking it off the wall.
Please see more at this question and answer.

How important ………..do charities play around the world today

a) a part b) the part c) part d) an part

Essam ABDOU 21-10-2009 10:41 PM

If "How" is followed by "an adjective", you should use "a/an" in front of the "noun".
e.g. How significant a role did he play in your life?
How (a big piece / a piece big / a small piece / big a piece) do you want?

Best Regards

محمد عبد المنعم يحيي 21-10-2009 10:44 PM

اعتقد ان هناك خطا بالجملة والمفروض ان تكون
What ipmortant part do charities play
ولو اردنا استخدام How
How important is the part played by charities

Advanced Grammar in Use Unit 89 Page 178
If you put a countable noun between the adjective and the second as, you should use a/an in
front of the noun (if the noun is singular):
• Despite his disability, he tried to lead as normal a life as possible.
• She was as patient a teacher as anyone could have had.
The negative form of sentences like this can use either not as or sometimes not such:
He's not as good a player as he used to be.
• He's not such a good player as he used to be. (Notice the different word order.)
• They're not such terrible children as we'd expected. (We don't use not as with plural nouns.)

We can use how, so and too followed by an adjective in a similar way:
How significant a role did he play in your life?
• It's not quite so straightforward a problem as it might at first seem.
• 'Conspiracy' is perhaps too strong a word.
• How big a piece do you want?
