كم تقف الكلمات هند نعت اعمالك

وتتجلي القدرات عند قراءة ابداعاتك

جل القرطاس بين يديك

ولكن لي ملحوظه صغيره

Shall……….should

He said to me, " I shall travel tomorrow"

Is it ?

He told me that he should travel the next(following) day"

Is it so????

Just a note

Sir
Using would instead of should is not better; it's absolute since using should is apparently wrong as in
Comprehensive English Grammar
"It's completely grammatical uncommon using should as the past tense of shall in an error of which readers could have the perplex usage, hence in the way of indirect reporting of shall beware using the opaque unreal usage of shall"
regards
Mr. Ayman

Mr. Ayman

If so, what do you suggest to use instead of should when reporting shall as it expresses the future

and please tell me
where can I get what you have called Comprehensive English Grammar

Ala'a Eldin 20-02-2009 08:59 PM

Please tell me about reporting must as it expresses obligation
Should we keep it as it is? Should we change it to had to? Or both of them are acceptable

Thanks

Mr. ayman 20-02-2009 09:23 PM

Sir
We agree that "must" has many different uses, don't we?
Therefore,
As for reporting "must" with the meaning of obligation
It has both
1- to keep it unchanged if the obligation is still in practice
2- if the obligation has changed with the course of time, then it should be changed into " had to"
that's according to what has been tackled in"
Focus English Grammar
As for most book , they side with the ultimate change
That's God knows best

Thank you Mr Ayman
That is a good point of view
you have removed the opaue of reporting must completely
but for student, I think, we should stick to what is mentioned in the student book to not confuse students

Sir
Concerning "shall" you have already got it
Reporting "shall" undoubtedly is "would" as you spit it
As for Grammar book
I do have lots of rare and highly-valuable collection for most advanced levels
I promise you, dear friend, to try to scan them for you and other colleagues
