Swine Flu: Symptoms, Causes and Prevention Tips Swine flu is a type of virus that mainly infects pigs. It doesn't normally infect people, but human infections can and do happen. The virus is contagious and can spread from human to human. The current swine influenza (H1N1) virus has components of pig and bird influenza viruses in it, so humans don't have any immunity to it. That makes it more likely to become a pandemic virus (have the ability to cause a global outbreak) if it can easily spread from person-to-person. There are antiviral medicines you can take to prevent or treat swine flu. There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to the symptoms of common flu that occurs in humans. The symptoms are mostly fever, cold, cough, runny nose, body aches, diarrhea, vomiting, headache etc. In swine flu the symptoms might be more severe like breathlessness, very high grade fever, loss of appetite and fluid intake. The important fact is to prevent the spread of this infection. To protect yourself from swine flu, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Stay home from work or school if you are sick. Consult a doctor immediately when in doubt about your symptoms. |

Child labour Child labour is often the upshot of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy. Unless the menace of child labour is eradicated, the country's progress in near future is bound to be poor. The children who languish in slavery in dimly lit, cramped spaces in factories, houses, toiling 16 hours a day, getting little pay and more abuse are crying for rescue. Although civilization has entered the 21st century, child labour continues as the worst form of slavery in society. A labourer in an industrial set up is one who sells his/her labour to an employer in lieu of wages under certain work-related conditions such as legal safeguards, work safety, bargaining power, and right to special amenities. But children have no identity as workers. They have just to obey the master and remain at his mercy. There are not minimum wages or working hours for them. Vulnerable to physical and mental exploitation, the children are abused and beaten and more often than not such abuses go unnoticed. It is generally believed that poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and the population explosion are the major reasons allowing child labour to thrive. Some think that so long as poverty exists child labour cannot be removed. But the truth is that child servitude is the root cause of the other maladies. Adults lose much because an employer seeks cheap child labour. Thus, poverty can never be removed unless child labour is strictly abolished. |

Role of Women in child development Women is the most soothing creation of God. She assumes the roles of a daughter, a mother, a wife and above all, the role of a nation builder. A great philosopher has stated, "the hands that rock the cradle rule the world." Mother moulds the character and destiny of her child. She is responsible for his all-round development. Napoleon once said, "Give me good mothers and I will give a good nation." History was not guided by men of courage but by the mothers of those men who taught them how to walk through difficult times. The child learns his first lesson at the knees of his mother. He is a clean slate and anything could be written on it. An educated mother would be able to teach and train in a much better manner than an illiterate mother. If our women are educated, trained and polished for a tough life, they would develop their own children for perfection. Therefore, an educated and trained mother would always develop her children so that they would be able to get whatever they desired. An illiterate mother cannot mould him well as she cannot visualize that there is a different world beyond her own. Her handicap becomes the long lasting limitation of her child. Her child develop beyond his limited cocoon. Nations have been built and ruined on account of good or poor training and development of children by their mothers. |

Why is 2009 H1N1 virus sometimes called “swine flu”?
This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs (swine) in North America. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and bird (avian) genes and human genes. Scientists call this a "quadruple reassortant" virus. |
