Leila El-Assaby
Leila El-Assaby was an archaeologist and research assistant at the university of Cairo. She had taken up archaeology as she wanted to follow up the footsteps of Dr. Hafez, the family friend who used to tell her, when she was young, about his wonderful digs.
She got her degree in Rome as she didn't want anyone to say that Dr. Hafez gave her special treatment at Cairo university as he was her father’s friend.
She is serious and worries about everything unlike her sister Samira.
She worked with Dr. Hafez in the valley of Nobles in Egypt. They discovered wonderful things there. She was a hard worker.
Amalia, the local archaeologist in Peru, didn’t like her as she was jealous of her. She caused Leila to be in prison for some time. Leila forgave her as she was tolerantمتسامحة
Leila was brave when she could caught Lander before escaping outside Peru.
Samira
She was Leila's sister. She was a reporter on one of the Cairo newspapers.
She was funny and full of enthusiasm حماس. You quickly forget you are nervous or worried when you are with her.
She was a loving character who tried to comfort تهدأ Leila while she was driving her to the airport.
Samira was always looking for good articles for her newspaper. So she asked Leila to send her interesting stories about her excavations and explorations of the Inca civilization.
Dr. Hafez
He was a famous Egyptian archaeologist and a university professor. He was the head of an exchange excavation project in Peru.
He makes good judgement حكم and has a clear understanding of people. He knew that Leila could be very useful with them on the project. So he brought her from Cairo and put her in charge of one of the excavation teams.
He was cautious حريص. When he talked about the secrets أسرار of the tombs, he looked around .
- He had a sense of humour روح الدعابة when Leila wanted to show him her discovery of the new site he told her:“You're not going to show me two strangers sitting at a cafe , are you ?”
Martin Lander
He was a liar as he said that he is a mining engineer in the United Mining back upon engineeringترك الهندسة and got involvedتورط with swindlers النصابين and antique robbers.
He was deceitful مخادع as he persuaded Amalia's father to put up money on a silver mine that never existed, and got away with the old man's money.
He was a thief as he climbed down the cave and stole a few artefacts. When Leila discovered him, he told her that he wasn’t a thief but a collector of fine things.
He had many contacts in Peru. He could involve Pablo to work for him through briberyرشوة, using Pablo’s bad conditions.
Some time ha had a sense of humor. For example when he trapped Leila in the cave, he told her that he would let her spend the time in company of a great king.
Amalia
Amalia was a local archaeologist about the same age as Leila. She was working on the excavation under Dr Hafez. She was good at her work and had the toughness قوة of ancient Incas.
Dr Hafez trusted her and would not believe a word against her.
She had a sense of pride شعور بالكبرياء which was wounded جرحت by the arrival of Leila to lead her excavation team and also by the achievements made by Leila. When Leila discovered the llama geld figure and the mask of gold, jealousy الغيرة drove Amalia to raise suspicion تثير الشكوك against Leila. So she put a gold figure of a rabbit in Leila's work clothes to be suspected for theft.
- However, she felt sorry, when Leila was put in a police cell. So, she hurried to tell the police that Leila was innocentبريئة and asked Leila to forgive her.
- Amalia was determined مصممة to catch Lander and hand him over to the police. With Leila on her side, she drove along the high mountain to get her hand on him in Acomayo. However, she had an accident and broke a leg.
- When Leila's stay in Peru was over, Dr. Hafez put Amalia in charge of the new excavation team.
Pablo
Pablo was a corrupt civil workerموظف فاسد . He worked for the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, and was also on the UNESCO committee of the project. The excavators had to show him everything they found, and he made a note of it.
He betrayed خان them and helped Lander to steal the gold mask for a sum of money.
He was a fool. Dr Hafez was able to trick يخدع him into making confession اعترف though he tried to persuade Dr Hafez that he really was in hard conditions. He said that he had a sick child who needed expensive medicines that he could not affordيدفع لها .
Ramon
Ramon was one of the local workers on the excavation site. He was useful and likeableمحبوب. He was the first person to go into the tomb as his body was small enough to go through the hole that was made.
Being able to speak the native languageاللغة المحلية and English, he used to translate for Dr Hafez, bring him news and communicate with local officials.
He found a gold figure of a child which reminded him of the terrible habit of the Incas of killing children to please their gods.
At the end he drove both Dr Hafez and Leila in the car to help in chasing Lander. He was brave enough to jump upon the wing of the plane that Lander was going to use in his escape.
