Egypt is not the only country that has ancient monuments. England has a famous monument called Stonehenge. It is made of very large stones that stand in a circle. Inside the circle, more stones stand in a U-shape. The standing stones had large stones (called “lintel stones”) across their tops, but many of these have fallen.
We don’t know who built Stonehenge or why. Some scientists think it was a calendar that showed the beginning of summer. Some think it was a temple. We know that it was built in three steps. The first step was 5,000 years ago; the last step was 3,500 years ago. But no writings or drawings tell us about the building of Stonehenge.
