The Club
Zamalek Sporting Club "Nady Al-Zamalek" http://zamalek-sc.com/club/zamalek_logo.jpg History Established in 1911, holding the name Kasr El-niel "Nile Palace" then changed to Mokhtalat "The Mixed Club". It was administrated mostly, as was the case at this time in Egyptian football by foreign expatriates who didn't allow to many Egyptians to take part in the club. Mr Merzbach A Belgian Lawyer and former judge in the "Mixed Courts",a mark of the British occupation of Egypt named Merzbach became the first President of the club under the name Kasr El-Niel "Nile Palace" The new club was also close to the residential area of Kasr El Niel... These residents were the largest camp of the English army not only in Cairo or Egypt, but also in the whole region of Middle East and Africa... These residents were located on the Cairo Nile banks in place of the Hilton Hotel today... Mr. Merzbach called the new club the name of Kasr El Nil. Then he moved with his little club to a new land in the Mid-town in Cairo and it was no more convenient to keep the old name "Kasr El Nil" as it is no longer located beside the Nile river. so he decided to change the name to "El Mokhtalat "the Mixed Club"... Historical tales vary around the reasons and the motives beyond choosing this name.. Some said that the new name meant that the members of the club were a mix of various nationalities... Others said that he quoted the new name in referral to the name of the mixed courts that he was the chief of one of them himself. The first football team in the club was formed in 1913.The team was average in skill, and took part in domestic competitions along with Al-Ahly,Al Seka AlHadid club, British army teams and schools and college teams. http://zamalek-sc.com/club/Hussein-H...zamalek-sc.gif Hussien Hegazy However at this time, an Egyptian player who had just returned from his studies in Cambridge, UK named Hussien Hegazy established his own squad, that was named "Hegazy's Eleven" and started to rally with the British Army teams at that time. One of the British teams was a team named "Stanley's Team", that was formed from by a British man named Stanley and was made up of a group of British soldiers who were stationed in Egypt. Both teams met twice, and in both matches, Hegazy's Eleven won. Excited by their symbolic resistance to the British, both Egyptian clubs Al-Ahly and Al-Zamalek sought to bring member's of "Hegazy's Eleven" to their squads. Hegazy joined Al-Ahly, while the rest of his team mates joined Al-Zamalek. In 1919, Hegazy joined Al-Zamalek and the team became the most powerful team in Egyptian soccer at that time. He later rejoined Al-Ahly in 1924. In 1916, the idea of establishing a league in the sultanate of Egypt at that time, where Egyptian teams plays with teams from the allies' military clubs, including the British was getting more ripe. Al-Ahly refused to take part, which left Al-Zamalek alone as the only Egyptian club. However Al-Ahly took part the following year as a sign of resistance to the British and a way to show the Egyptian presence in the sport. Both Al-Zamalek and Al-Ahly also agreed on creating their own 2-game competition, the first was on 9 October 1917 which Al-Zamalek lost at home (0 - 1) and the second was on 2 March 1917 which Al-Zamalek won on Al-Ahly's turf (1 - 0). In 1930, the club's 60 member board met and decided to expel the foreign members of the club. Al-Zamalek continued its glory days, winning many titles. The most impressive result was winning against Al-Ahly (6 -0). The club changed its name from Al-Mokhtalat to "Farouk" . After the 1952 Revolution, the club's named was finally changed to "Al-Zamalek" . PRESIDENTS
