هذا المنتدى سيظل رائعا بالأساتذة الكرام
مستر سمير بارك الله في جهدك الفعل open من الممكن ان يكون غير متعدي ولذلك لا يحتاج ان يتحول الى المجهول ويكون المعنى سليم واليك معاني الفعل غذا كان غير متعدي وامثلة على ذلك open vi (become open) يفتح The door opened by itself. open vi (give access to) يفتح The door opens to a large courtyard. open vi (building: open doors) يفتح أبوابه The theatre opens at three in the afternoon. open vi (begin) يفتتح، يبدأ The meeting opened with a speech by the president. open vi (have a passage, outlet) يمر عبر The river opens into the Atlantic south of here. open vi (to part) يفتح على The forest opens to reveal a meadow. open vi (to unfold) يتفتح على، ينتشر The daylily petals opened at first light. |
There`s a similar sentence on WB P. 18 Ex. 2 Find the mistake No. e
Our school was opening exactly 25 years ago today. The correction is opened/was opened because open is both transitive and intransitive in this sense Best Regards |
thank you Mr Esaam to comment on this sentence

Thank you Mr Samir for raising this question discussion Here is an extract from Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 5th Edition As you can see, when "open" is used with shops , restaurants...., etc. (things that customers usually go to), the verb is intransitive I think the matter is clear now. Again thank you Mr Samir |
Yes, it's right.
When the door opened, Ali saw ...........on Open the door to see......behind |
than you for all

You quoted definition No. 6 under the entry OPEN in the dictionary Please Go up one notch and read definition No. 5 which deals with shops, offices, restaurants, etc What do you think? I think it`s more likely to be definiton No. 5 I need your opinion Best regards |

Dear Mr Essam Here I quoted both Definitions :No 5 & No 6 As you can see In Defintion No 5 "Open" can be used both Intransively and Transively The subject can be people who operate the shops or the shops themselves. None of the examples given by the dictionary are in the passive form. (I know it is a dictionary not a grammar text book. Al least a dictionary uses the most common language) In definition No 6: The subject of "open" is only shops, restauratnts ....etc. The dectionary here says that the verb is "intransitive". What do you think now, away from grammar argument, the appropriate usage of "open" is, if you are going to coin a sentence of your own? Awaiting for your answer. |
Dear Mr.H0riz0n,
The first line opened in 1989 (there is no object – OPEN here is INTRANSITIVE), The first line was opened in 1989 (this the passive form – OPEN here is TRANSITIVE), The government opened the first line in 1989 (the firstline is the object – OPEN here is TRANSITIVE), It is not a shop or a restaurant. It is something starting operating as in definition 6. Definition 6 used it both active and passive in the very same words but in the present: opens and is opened Best Regards |

I know the matter we are discussing is not : which is right and which is wrong? I know both are correct. What I want to say is that using it transitively is more common. |
Thank you, Mr. H0riz0n
Best regards |
