استفسار صغير من فضلكم

In Chapter 5 >>> The explorers entered the Eastern path and they knew that it's wrong
because the rocks were younger and there were plants and insects preserved in a rock

My Question is :

How that prove that they were wrong in taking this path?

First the eastern passage was going up not down , there were plant, animals and insects preserved on the rocks

This prove that the passage was deadly for plants, animals and insects. How come they are going to the center of the earth and the passage was going up! and the eastern passage ended by a blank wall
