عند إنشاء كلية العلوم بالجامعة المصرية (الحكومية) عام 1925 كان بها قسمان للرياضيات: قسم الرياضيات البحتة وقسم الرياضيات التطبيقية والذي رأسه عند إنشاءه الدكتور علي مصطفى مشرفة، وتخرجت أول دفعة من حاملي بكالوريوس الرياضيات في 1929، وكان من خريجي هذه الدفعة محمد مرسي أحمد الذي أصبح بعد ذلك رئيساً لجامعة عين شمس ثم وزيرا للتعليم العالي.
سار قسم الرياضيات منذ إنشاءه على مجاراة المستوى العلمي العالمي في التدريس والأبحاث، فحتى الخمسينيات من القرن الماضي كانت امتحانات البكالوريوس ترسل إلى جامعة لندن للاطمئنان على أن مستواها يضاهي مستوى الجامعات العالمية، كما كان القسم يستقدم كبار الأساتذة من الخارج للتدريس، وممن استقدمهم القسم: أ.ل. إنس E. L. Ince و سيدني تشابمان S. Chapman وبول مونتيل Paul Montelوموريس فريشيه M. Frechetو ماكس بورن Max Born و ج. كوسول J.-L. Kuszul وجاك لوي ليونز J.-L. Lions، ومازالت رسائل الماجستير والدكتوراه تُحكَّم في الخارج حتى يومنا هذا.
في 1969 تم ضم قسمي الرياضيات البحتة والتطبيقية في قسم واحد وأصبح القسم يمنح درجة بكالوريوس واحدة في الرياضيات، ثم أضيفت إليها درجة البكالوريوس في الإحصاء الرياضي عام 1979 ثم درجة البكالوريوس في الحسابات العلمية عام 1982 والتي تم تعديل مقرراتها لتصبح درجة البكالوريوس في علوم الحاسب
