أنا مع had planned وذلك للأسباب الآتية
1- في كتاب A practical English grammar 4 th edition

Oxford university press p. 175
تحت عنوان the past perfect
the past perfect can be used similarly for an action which began before the time of speaking in the past and
b) stopped at the time or just before it
ومن الامثلة
The old oak tree, which had stood in the churchyard for 300 hundred years .suddenly crashed to the ground
مثال اخر
Bill had been a soldier for ten years and planned to stay in the army till he was thirty
يوضح المرجع هنا انه يمكن استخدام الزمنين التام والمستمر ايضا ,

وحيث انه لا توجد في الجملة كلمة تدل على الاستمرارية مثل for او since فالأصح هي had planned
