I asked the teachers in www.bbc.co.uk and the answer was "had planned" is definite. Your plans had been made and are potentially complete.
"had been planning" suggests indefiniteness. Your trip was still in the planning stages and you were not totally sure that you would go. There was an element of improbability, albeit perhaps small.
