I think Martha is a punctuaperson so she was worried as the professor came home earler than usual and his dinner wasn't ready then. as Axel said , his uncle was strange when he was exited this make Martha get worried that he might be angry becase of this delay.For the professor, I think that he didn't have his dinner because he decided not to eat or sleep till he found out the sewcret codein the parchment. this prove that he was a hard headed man and didn'taccept anything to be difficult or impossible.
