Word of the Day: receive




The verb "receive" can often be used in place of "get." The level of diction for this word is higher (It sounds a little better), but you can't use it in every way that you can use the word "get."

• Dan got an email from his boss.
• Dan received an email from his boss.
• Patricia got a package in the mail.
• Patricia received a package in the mail.
• The students got rewards for their accomplishments.
• The students received rewards for their accomplishments.
• Our friends got some bad news yesterday.
• Our friends received some bad news yesterday.

but not...

• I got some milk at the store. (okay)
• I received some milk at the store. (no)
