إن مصر اعتادت في عهد ماقبل الثورة علي سك عملاتها بدور السك الأجنبية , ومع بداية الثورة أنشأت دار سك العملة المصرية, وبدأ الإنتاج عام 1954 لبعض العملات صغيرة القيمة ثم تعاظم نشاط الدار لتلبية احتياجات بعض الدول العربية في سك عملاتها ومنها سوريا واليمن والمملكة العربية السعودية وذلك لأنها كانت دار السك الوحيدة في الشرق الأوسط , وقامت دار السك المصرية بعد ذلك بإصدار العملات التذكارية لتخليد المناسبات الوطنية والأحداث التاريخية المهمة وكانت إما من الذهب أو الفضة.والجدير بالذكر أن المرسوم الملكي الخاص بإنشاء دار سك العملة المصرية صدر عام 1950, وتم إنشاء دار السك لتقليل النفقات الباهظة التي كانت تعود علي دار السك الأجنبية ولسد احتياجات التداول داخل مصر , وكانت دار سك العملة تمثل مظهرا من مظاهر قوة وسيادة الدولة , وبدأ الإنتاج الفعلي للعملة المعدنية في الصدور منتصف عام 1954,وكانت الآلات المستخدمة تأتي من ألمانيا وإنجلترا.
ومن مميزات العملات المعدنية إ نها لا تتعرض للتدمير مثلما يحدث مع العملات الورقية , ولا تتعرض للتقليد وعمرها الافتراضي أكبر بكثير من العمر الافتراضي للعملات الورقية.
