Summary

Chapters 6 -7 – 8
q Axel was awakened أوقظ when he heard the noise of waves crashing on the shore of a sea. Then, he heard his uncle’s voice. He called his uncle. His uncle asked him to call again to calculate the distance between them (six kilometers). They heard each other because sound traveled down the passage. The professor asked Axel to walk down the passage to meet them.
q As the passage was steep منحدر, Axel fell down a well and fainted when his head hit a rock. When he came to himself, he found his uncle beside him. He was happy and gave a cry of joy because Axel was alive. حي
q After a long sleep , Axel awoke to find a sea which the professor called “The Lidenbrock Sea”. On the shore they saw a forest of huge mushrooms which looked like umbrellas. They also found bones of animals which had long disappeared from the earth (extinct animals). They were in a huge cave. The light was white and cold.
q The professor asked Hans to make a raft to explore the sea. So, Hans cut down some trees and tied them together. Hans tried fishing. He tied a hook to a rope, put some meat on it and threw it into the sea. He caught a strange fish with a flat head with no tail or eyes. The professor tied a pickaxe to the end of a long rope and threw it in the sea to (find out) measure the depth of the sea (it didn’t touch the bottom).
q Suddenly, the raft was lifted by a sea monster. Then, there was a fight between two monsters and one of them was killed. The fight lasted استمرت for two or three hours. The monsters were terrifying مرعب but they didn’t attack لم يهاجموا the three men.
q On the third day, they saw a fountain نافورة and Axel was afraid of it because he thought it was another sea monster. When they got closer (nearer), they saw a huge dark shape in the sea. It was an island (Axel Island) and the fountain was a geyser نبع ماء ساخن.
q A storm blew هبت عاصفة (it lasted for three days). The professor refused رفض to lower خفض the sail شراع or take down the mast صارى. He wanted the wind to blow تدفع them forward at a great speed. A ball of fire appeared in the sky and burst انفجرت when it hit the raft. Axel fainted again. Why?
q When Axel awoke, they reached the other shore. There, they saw a skull جمجمة of a human and bones of extinct animals. This means that men had lived on the shore of this sea thousands of years ago. They came to a forest of strange pale yellow trees with no lower branches ليس لها فروع منخفضة. So, they could see through it. They saw mammoths. They looked like elephants but they were much bigger and they had longer tusks. Axel recognized تعرف عليها them from pictures in his science books. They saw the shepherd راعىof the herd قطيع of mammoths. He was more than three metres tall with a long hair.
q They were afraid of the shepherd. So, they ran back to the raft. Axel saw a knife shining تلمع in the sand. It was made of steel صلب and its blade حدwas rough. The professor said that someone used it to carve حفرhis name on a rock. They looked allover the rocks around them. They read the letters A.S. on a rock at the entrance مدخل of a dark tunnel نفق مظلم. This means that Arne Saknussemm was there. Axel’s doubts شكوك about the journey disappeared and he was eager to continue the journey.
q They entered the tunnel نفق, but a rock blocked سدت their way. They tried to break it with pickaxes but couldn’t because it was too hard صلب. Axel suggested to explode تفجير it with gunpowder بارود. Hans made a hole in the rock with his pickaxe and they packed ملأ it (filled) with gunpowder. Axel made a fuse فتيل out of clothes and lit أشعل it to blow up ينسف the rock. After the explosion, a huge hole opened and the sea became one big wave موجة كبيرة. The water carried them along at a great speed.
q Axel noticed لاحظ that the water swept كنست away their tools and instruments and most of the food and drink. They had only some biscuits and a piece of meat. He didn’t tell his uncle because he thought they would probably be killed soon.
