The increase in the prices of oil has brought the world to its senses. Governments are searching for a suitable alternative, but so far in vain. They are considering how they can make better use of the two other major fuels, coal and natural gas, but they have found that neither of them can take the place of oil in their economies. Some children have difficulties with their bones or their muscles. They may not be able to walk or talk or write in the same way as other children. These children are physically handicapped. But with some help they can go to school and study the same subjects as their friends and take the same examinations.
Other children may not be physically handicapped but may have difficulties in thinking and reasoning. These children are mentally handi-capped. With these children two things are important: Firstly their family has to accept that the child has a handicap and secondly society has to agree that these children need special schools.

Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the Netherlands, where he spent his childhood. He started painting in the early 1880s. The paintings that he produced show simple people living in the poverty of life at that time. In 1886 Van Gogh went to Paris, where he studied the French Impressionist painters and started to use brighter colours in his paintings. In 1888 he moved to Arles, in the south of France, where he developed his own style of painting: ordinary subjects in brilliant, bold colours. His paintings are all quite realistic and seem to be one of the happiest times of his life. After some months he invited the painter Gauguin, who he had met in Paris.
They soon started having violent arguments and after one of these, Van Gogh threatened Gauguin with a razor. The same night Van Gogh cut off his own ear. Van Gogh started to show more signs of insanity and was sent to a special hospital. He continued to paint but some people think his paintings from this period look unrealistic and messy, perhaps showing the state of his mind. On 27th July, 1890, he went into the fields and shot himself. He died two days later. Van Gogh is one of the few artists whose works everyone recognizes. In 1998 one of his paintings was sold for 44 million dollars. However during short and tragic life Van Gogh hardly sold any of the 750 paintings that he produced and was not recognized as a great painter.
