This is a fantastic website full of ready made Powerpoints, covering lots of topics. You will find lots of resources to use in literacy and numeracy classes, and there are lots of good Powerpoints that can be used in Skills for Independent Living classes, to do with social issues. If you go to the box marked ‘topics and themes’ it gives you a list of hundreds, if not thousands of things covered in the Powerpoints.

This is a good literacy website, with lots of worksheets that can be adapted to suit the level of your learners. The fourth grade section has some useful resources for skimming and scanning for example. There is also some Smartboard stuff but I haven’t checked this out yet.

Great website with lots of literacy, numeracy and basic skills (e.g. number / colour recognition) resources. The site is graded in sections, from kindergarten to eighth grade, so there is a lot to suit every level. It’s an American site but there are lots of English resources on here. There are loads of interactive quizzes and activities, and lots of worksheets to complement the activities. In fact, on just the eighth grade literacy section there are hundreds of resources!

I’m sure we have all seen this site, but it is a good one for literacy and numeracy resources anyway. Go to the site guide on this page and it will lead you to the specific resources. It’s aimed directly at adults, and even though some of the interactive activities and quizzes are a bit bland, they are still worth a go.

Good literacy site, with resources from Entry Level to Level 2. The worksheets again are a bit plain, but they are useful for quick revision tasks / tests and can be put on the Smartboard. The site looks a bit boring when you first go to it, but there are some excellent resources to be found. This is a complete interactive lesson that is really good fun about the use of apostrophes. It also has sound so will speak its way through the presentation. This website gives you links to many different, interactive numeracy and literacy resources. It is extremely easy to navigate. There are things like cash machine simulators and colourful worksheets. I haven’t had chance to check them all out, but there are resources such as interactive activities where the learner has to fill in missing words and then the computer reads it back to them so they can hear if what they have written is correct. There is a game on here where students have to type in plurals of words in order to fill a fish tank with fish with every correct answer. Sounds childish, but trust me, the words that it gives you to pluralise aren’t all that simple!

It is useful in Entry Level classes and has games connected with labelling fruit and vegetables, naming body parts, creating stories etc and as a lot of them are drag and drop activities then they are great for using on the Smart board and for encouraging students to come to the front to increase confidence when using the Smart board. There are things though that may suit higher ability students, such as using compound words and verbs. There are numeracy and literacy resources on this site.

This is a brilliant website. It is directed at children, but I found an activity on here that was an interactive test to test the students’ knowledge of BSL which was great because I had taught that in my class last week. There are interactive activities, such as making mosaics, following instructions, checking knowledge of everyday activities such as how to make a baked potato. The site is really, really easy to use, and it is all singing and all dancing.

If you are teaching about newspapers, this is a great site. You can click on your geographical area to find out things that have happened throughout history. I clicked on Manchester and the Victorian era. You then choose a headline and it takes you to an interactive activity where you can ‘interview’ people connected with your story and you have to edit and write your newspaper article. The blurb on the site says: ‘Explore historical newspapers packed with true stories. Find out about grim and gruesome facts. Interview famous characters from history. These are good pictures to put on the Smart Board as fillers. (You can zoom into them as well.) They are pictures and the students have to name various items. The picture is very busy and has lots of things happening in it. There is one connected with movies, one connected with cities and a couple connected with bands. E.g one picture has a picture of a tub of Philadelphia cheese on the floor hence the film ‘Philadelphia’. THIS SITE SHOULD BE USED WITH DISCRETION AND IS ONLY REALLY SUITABLE FOR MATURE LEARNERS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE BAND ONE YOU WILL SEE WHY. Also, you don’t get answers but a quick scour on Google will bring the answers up from kind people who have decided to publish them.

Makaton Sign Demos. This is a really good site that I used with a learner who could not communicate verbally. To ensure she could participate in every lesson I set her SMART targets which meant she had to demonstrate at least one sign in every session at the front of her class. If I chose a word that she didn’t know then we could watch the short video demonstration and she would learn a new sign. If I chose one she did know then I could check it using the online video. Each demonstration video only lasts a matter of a couple of seconds. As well as ensuring the learner was meeting her targets, the rest of the class learned on a weekly basis a way in which they could communicate with this student.
