لا يوجد فى اى منتدى اخر و تحدى

Sec 3 WB, Practice Test 4: I wish I (know - had known - knew - could know) where I left my jacket. The answer in the TG is "knew". Could you explain why "had known" and "could know" are wrong answers?

When you are expressing a regret about something in the present time, you use I wish + simple past. There is no reason to use the modal with know in this context. Can know is the same meaning as know. So I wish I could know is unnatural.

When you are expressing regret about something in the past, you use I wish + past perfect. In this sentence, there would have to be more context given for you to think that this is referring to something in the past: I wish then [a past time], I wish last month.

When this was introduced in Sec 3 Unit 10, the listening exercise had two girls talking. One is expressing regrets for something that clearly happened (or didn't happen) in the past: I don't think I've done very well in this year's science tests. I wish I'd done more revision this year. I just wish I'd worked harder this year. But in the isolated sentence you have in this test item, no such context is given. Assume the simplest
