![]() We thought they would come, ...? Add a question tag. Please explain it in detail. ده رد محرر موقع LONGMAN Could you please tell me where this question is from? The sentence is a bit strange for a grammar exercise because there are two verb phrases — thought and would come. But I can easily imagine contexts in which such a sentence might be spoken, and the answer is simple. We thought they would come, didn’t we? The second clause, they would come, could be replaced by so, which would give you this sentence: We thought so, didn’t we? You thought that was easy, didn’t you? لكن ايه رأي عباقرة الموقع |

![]() I think both answers didn't we and wouldn't they are correct
this depends in spoken languge greatly on the the stressed part in the main sentence |

teacherThanks. This sentence was an item in the TOEFL test. Is there a rule? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But on the TOEFL, which has multiple choices, I assume that only one choice would be correct. Again, either verb could be tagged, so my answer could be either of these (and I assume that only one of these would appear as a choice on the TOEFL): We thought they would come, didn’t we? We thought they would come, wouldn’t they? By the way, it is now my policy not to answer about a specific sentence unless I know where it is from. I’ve had too many experiences of readers jumping down my throat after I’ve replied. ![]() |
