Icon114 playoff بارجراف عن فوز مصر والمباراه الفاصله

Cairo - Egypt defeated Algeria 2-0 at their World Cup qualifier match Saturday evening in Cairo, setting up a playoff match later this month between the two teams, who have seen tensions between them escalate in recent days. The win sent jubilant Egyptians to the streets, with throngs of people celebrating into the night in various parts of the country.

In Cairo, main routes were blocked as fans on foot and in vehicles took over the roads. Many had their face painted red, black and white - the national colours - and were waving Egyptian flags, banging on drums and honking their car horns.

Crowds of youngsters gathered at street corners across the city and sang out slogans and chants to booming music. Others danced as aerosol cans were lit up into bright flames.

Some 74,000 people were estimated to be in attendance for the game at the city's main stadium, with some 2,000 seats reserved for Algerian supporters.

Just two minutes into the game Egypt scored, sparking early hopes for the fans in Cairo. However, tension reigned for most of the contest, as the next goal in the physical match-up would only come over 90 minutes of play later.

Egypt had to win by at least three goals to qualify for next year's World Cup finals but with the result was still able to force a playoff.

In what appeared to be preparatory moves requested by FIFA, the governing body of world football, Egyptian security forces were dispersed widely, with riot gear and extra manpower on the ready.

The Algerian embassy was particularly placed under protection and police blocked off access within a two-street radius of the building.

Concerns were raised Friday, after violence in Algeria on Thursday targeted Egyptian families, apparently in retaliation for an alleged attack that day by crowds of Egyptian football fans on the Algerian national team in Cairo.

In a statement, FIFA said its World Cup Organizing Committee has asked the Egyptian Football Association "and the highest authorities through the relevant ministries" to provide written guarantees for "necessary additional safety and security measures" for the Algerian team and its supporters.

The chairman of Egypt's National Sports Council, Hassan Saqr, denied that Egyptian fans attacked or injured Algerian football players. Security officials told local media the attack was staged by Algerian fans.

In 1989, fans rioted after Egypt beat Algeria 1-0 to qualify for the World Cup. Neither team has qualified since

Egypt beat Algeria in World Cup qualifier

Both teams finished the campaign with identical records
  • Cairo: Egypt won 2-0 against Algeria on Saturday in a crucial World Cup qualifier in Cairo.
Both teams finished the campaign with identical records. They will now face a sudden death playoff in Sudan on Wednesday to decide who goes through to next year's finals in South Africa.
Security in and around the Cairo Stadium has been beefed up after reports that alleged football-throwing fans injured three Algerian players.
Emad Meteab headed in a goal in the fifth minute of injury time to give Egypt a 2-0 win over Algeria in a World Cup qualifier, setting up a decisive playoff between the teams next week.
Amr Zaky had given Egypt the lead in the second minute on Saturday, but the host needed a second goal to ensure that both teams ended up level on points and goal difference in Group C.
The two sides will play again on Wednesday in Sudan, with the winner advancing to South Africa.
Egypt, a record six-time winner of the African Cup, hasn't reached the World Cup since 1990. The last time Algeria played in the World Cup was 24 years ago.
The rivallry betwen the two Arab countries dates back decades.
In the 1980s and Olympic qualifier was disrupted by brawls. Nine years later when Egypt beat Algeria in a World Cup qualifier, Algerian legend Lakhdar Belloumi attacked the Egyptian team doctor.
Which team are you cheering for? Do you think Egypt will qualify for the World Cup finals? Is the political rivalry spicing up the game?

CAIRO (AFP) - A roar of delight erupted here Saturday as Egypt beat Algeria, setting up a World Cup play-off with their bitter rivals after a tense encounter just days after a violent attack on the visiting team's bus.
Emad Moteab scored five minutes into stoppage time to earn Egypt a 2-0 victory that led to wild celebrations at the final whistle that soon spilled onto the streets of the capital.

Trouble flared after the game when a group of Egyptian fans hurled stones at buses ferrying Algerian fans away from the stadium, an AFP journalist observed.
Three Algerians were lightly injured in the attack, security forces said.
"Egypt, Egypt!" shouted around 70,000 delirious fans packed inside the Cairo International Stadium, as fireworks lit the sky.
"I knew they would score at the last minute, this is Egypt. I knew we were going to win," said Yussef, a young "Pharoahs" supporter.

Another emotional Egyptian fan, Hani, described the result as "a dream," while his compatriot Mohammed proclaimed: "We deserved to win against Algeria. We are the Pharaohs!"
The result left the North African neighbours level on points and goal difference at the top of Group C so they will meet again next Wednesday in Sudan to decide which country goes to South Africa.

Watching on with broad smiles of relief were Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, the sons of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who promptly sent the team a message of congratulations.
The build-up to the match had been marred by hostility between supporters, including stones being thrown at the Algerian team bus as it drove from Cairo airport to their hotel and Internet and media wars of words.

World football governing body FIFA confirmed to AFP that three Algerian players had sustained injuries, potentially ruling them out of the showdown.
"We saw that three players had been injured -- Khaled Lemmouchia on the head, Rafik Halliche above the eye and Rafik Saifi on the arm," FIFA representative Walter Gagg said.
"These weren't superficial injuries," he stressed. "With the stitches needed, we will have to see if these players can play. The team doctor has still to make a decision on that."
Gagg said Algeria's goalkeeping coach had suffered concussion, and described the bus itself as in a "very bad way with broken windows and traces of blood on the floor".
For the Algerians, Egyptian security officials and the media added insult to the injuries by saying that the Algerian team faked the attack.
The Egyptian press reported that an initial investigation showed the Algerians had smashed the windows of the bus with emergency hammers.
The violence had repercussions abroad too.
An angry crowd attacked the homes of Egyptian workers at M'sila in southeastern Algeria, while a group of young men ransacked the building of an Egyptian company, reports said.
In Algiers, all streets leading to the Egyptian embassy were closed from Thursday evening and security measures installed at Egyptian companies, an AFP reporter said.
And in France's southern port of Marseille, which has many residents of Algerian origin, security at the Egyptian consulate was boosted and 600 police officers flooded the city centre.
But authorities in Cairo breathed a collective sigh of relief after the 2-0 result in favour of the home team saw concerns about violence ease.
Nevertheless Egyptian supporters set up a roadblock outside the stadium, smashing the windows of at four busses carrying Algerian fans, leaving the street littered with broken glass, an AFP reporter said.
A nearby police anti-riot unit did not intervene.
Security forces said only one bus had been attacked, with three Algerian fans suffering light injuries.
The rival national teams have a history of bad blood, with riots breaking out after Egypt defeated Algeria in a 1989 match in Cairo.
Algeria player Lakhdar Belloumi was tried in absentia and sentenced to prison in Egypt for allegedly seriously injuring the Egyptian team doctor with a bottle after that match.
Interpol issued an arrest warrant for Belloumi over the incident.
Egypt last qualified for the World Cup in 1990, and Algeria in 1986.
