South Africa turns new page in relations with Egypt
Feb. 23, 2014 17:09 ![]() By YOUM7 CAIRO: Despite the hostile position adopted by South Africa towards Egypt after the events of June 30, South African President Jacob Zuma sent his Minister of State Security Siyabonga Soely to visit Cairo on Sunday. According to a statement issued by South Africa’s Embassy in Cairo, the visit aims to deliver a message to interim President Adly Mansour regarding recent developments in the region and ways to increase cooperation between the two countries during the coming period. The step reflects the notable change in the position adopted by South Africa towards Egypt. A source told Youm7 that Egypt welcomes cordial relations with South Africa and other countries who adopted a hostile position towards the country after the events of June 30. The source added that Egypt will not accept any foreign interference in its internal affairs. On the other hand, the South African official expressed his country’s support for Egypt during the current transitional period. Soely said that his country hopes Egypt will restore its leading role in Africa during the coming period. After his meeting with Mansour, Soely said South Africa’s government appreciates the role performed by Egypt as a major power in both Africa and Middle East. He stressed the strategic importance of Egypt in resolving crises in the region and on the African continent
