He was excited. He exclaimed when he found an old book. It is more than six hundred years old. It was fantastic. This book is a translation of a famous Icelandic book. It was written by Snorri Sturlasson in the twelfth century.حضر البروفيسور " ليدنبروك " الى بيته متأخراً فى ظهر يوم الأحد فى شهر مايوعام 1863 وتعجب كثيراً عندما وجد كتاب قديم عمره أكثر من ستمائة عام. كان الكتاب رائع. هذا الكتاب هو ترجمه لكتاب أيسلندى شهير كتبه " سنورى ستورلاسون " فى القرن الثانى عشر. A piece of parchment fell out of the book. There were strange letters on it. It was written in runes which were the letters of the Icelandic alphabet. He looked puzzled. He was angry because the letters on the parchment were mixed up, and he couldn't understand it. It was written in a secret code, and there was something else. سقطت قطعه من الورق( المصنوع من جلد الحيوان ) من الكتاب و كانت هناك حروف ابجديه مكتوبه فيها. هذه الحروف كانت حروف اللغه الأيسلنديه القديمه. كانالبروفيسور يبدو متحيراً وكان غاضباً لأن الحروف كانت مختلطه ولم يستطع فهمها. كانت مكتوبه بشفره سريه و كان هناك شئ اخر. The book and the parchment weren't written in the same handwriting. Therefore Professor thought that the parchment was written by someone who owned the book. كانت الورقه مكتوبه بخط مختلف عن الخط المكتوب فى الكتاب. و منذ ذلك الوقت اعتقد البروفيسور ان الورقه مكتوبه عن طريق شخص ما امتلك هذا الكتاب. When the Professor used a magnifying glass to make the letter bigger, he looked at the parchment again and pointed to a line of letters. " Arne Saknussemm ", that's an Icelandic name. He was a famous Icelandic scientist of the sixteenth century. He made many great scientific discoveries. He must have owned this book. عندما استخدم البروفيسور عدسات مكبره لتكبير الحروف , نظر الى الورقه مره أخرى و أشار الى صف من الحروف. " ارن ساكنوسيم " هو اسم ايسلندى و كان عالم ايسلندى مشهور من القرن السادس عشر , قام بالكثير من الاكتشافات العلميه العظيمه. فلابد ان يكون هو صاحب هذا الكتاب. Professor asked himself "why Saknussemm wanted to hide what he had discovered ". Professor guessed that the message was written in Latin and not Icelandic. Scientists of the sixteenth century always wrote about their discoveries in Latin. He tried reading the letters but they still made no sense. So that they formed Latin words but he still couldn't make any sense of it. While he was sitting in front of the window, he saw the back and the front of the parchment. Suddenly he saw some Latin words which he knew. These words were meant "a crater of the Earth". In this way he had broken the secret code and managed to understand all of it. Axel wanted to hide that he broke the secret message from his uncle because he thought that if his uncle read the parchment, he would do what its writer did. Axel was afraid to tell his uncle this matter because professor would want to take Axel with him. They would never return to Hamburg. So Axel decided to stop his uncle from reading the parchment. Axel wanted to burn the parchment, but the door opened and his uncle appeared while he was just going to burn it. There was no lunch or breakfast and Axel was very hungry. So he decided to tell his uncle about his discovery, and he could stop his uncle from making such a dangerous thing. Axel told his uncle that the secret message said "Go down into the crater of Sneffels which the shadow of Scartaris touches before July. Then you'll reach to the centre of the Earth. I have done this. Arne Saknussemm". After his uncle knew that, he decided to pack his box and told axel to pack his box also. Professor brought the Atlas and showed Axel the places Arne had written about in the map of Iceland. They saw the Sneffels which was a huge mountain nearly two thousands meters high. Axel tried to tell his uncle that the journey would be very dangerous, but he wouldn't listen. When Axel told his uncle that this mountain is a volcano, and they would die of the heat of its centre. His uncle replied that Sneffels was an extinct volcano, it hadn't erupted since 1229, now it was quite cold. It had several craters, only one led to the Earth. The mountain Scartaris casts its shadow over this crater at the end of June. Finally, professor told Axel that they should go there and see for themselves, and they left to Iceland the day after tomorrow. Martha, their cook was surprised when she knew that they were going down to the Centre of the Earth. She thought that the professor was mad. When Martha asked Axel about their journey, he pointed down towards the Centre of the Earth. But Martha thought they were going to the cellar. They set off on their journey and traveled by the steamer to Copenhagen, and from there they sailed north to Iceland. In Copenhagen, they met a Danish scientist who gave them letters of introduction to the most important men in Iceland. One of them was Dr Frederickson. The sea was very rough and professor was seasick for most of the voyage. They arrived in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland but the professor didn't want to explore Reykjavik and said that the most interesting part of Iceland was under the ground. They went to Dr Frederickson who was a very helpful man. Professor told him that he was interested in exploring Iceland's geology. Dr Frederickson gave them information about Sneffels. He arranged for a guide called Hans to take them to Sneffels. They liked Hans who was a big man who moved slowly and didn't say much. Hans led them out of Reykjavik and passed through the countryside. The Icelanders were always pleased to see them, they gave them the best food and drink and they refused professor's offers of money. After three more days they reached the base of Sneffels. Because of Axel's fears, he had a terrible dream. He dreamed that he was inside a volcano. There was a great explosion and he was shot up out the volcano like a rocket. They climbed Sneffels in the next day and reached the top of the mountain. They camped at the edge of the crater. They were more than one thousand five hundred metres above sea level. The three men "professor – Axel – Hans" entered the crater of Sneffels which was shaped like an ice-cream cone. The opening was more than A kilometer wide and it was about six hundred metres deep. They used ropes and were standing at the bottom of the crater. At the bottom there were three chimneys. Each of these was about thirty metres wide. They started to explore them, and then professor shouted pointing to a large rock with some marks on it. The marks were letters and they spelled the name of Arne Saknussemm. They had to discover which of the three chimneys Arne had descended. It was the chimney which the shadow of Scartaris touched at the end of June, but there was no shadow today because there was no sun. It was June 25th so; they had to wait until the end of June. On June 28th, they awoke to bright sunshine. At noon the shadow of Scartaris felt on the middle of the three chimneys. Then their journey began, they prepared to descend the chimney. Hans put the tools and the scientific instruments into a bag tied to the rope. He threw down the rope, they tied a long rope to the edge of the chimney and descended. After three hours in the bottom of the chimney, there was hardly any light. It was getting darker and darker. Lidenbrock said to Axel that he had examined the rocks and found that the Centre of the Earth couldn't be hot. He said that all the scientists who thought that the Centre of the Earth was hot were wrong. Early morning the following day, a ray of sunlight awoke them and the red lava walls sparkled like jewels. The three men left the main chimney and entered a small passage that led off to the right. When they stopped for the night, they were in a kind of cave. But there was plenty of air. There was a wind blowing through the cave. Axel was too tired and hungry but there was something else that worried him. They had used about half of water that they had, but professor had expected to find underground springs of water. At noon the following day, they came to the end of the passage which was divided into two paths, one going east, the other west. Professor didn't hesitate to go to the eastern path and the two men followed him. They were so tired because the path was going up not down. Also the rocks were different. They were walking through younger rocks, where plants and animals were preserved in the rocks. ظل الثلاثة رجال يتابعون المسير فى الممر الشرقى لمدة ثلاثة أيام الى أن شعروا بشدة التعب لأن الممر كان صاعداً لأعلى (غير مستوى) وأيضاً كانت الصخور مختلفه. كانوا يسيرون عبر صخور ليست بقديمه حيث كانت النباتات والحيوانات محتجزه بداخلها. Axel showed his uncle the shell of an insect preserved in the rock which he picked up, then the professor said that they made a mistake and took the wrong path. They continued to follow the eastern passage and passed through walls of cool. Bit after two days they came to a blank wall. They had to go back to the crossroads and take the western passage. التقط أكسيل حشره كانت محتجزه داخل الصخور وأراها لعمه، حينئذ قال البروفيسور انهم أخطأوا وساروا فى الممر الخطأ فإستمروا فى إتباع المسير فى الممر الشرقى وعبروا خلال حوائط من الفحم. ولكن بعد مرور يومين وصلوا الى حائط حيث لا نمفذبه، لذلك كان يلزم عليهم الرجوع خلفاً الى مفترق الطرق والسير فى الممر الغربى. After three days, they reached the crossroads. Axel was tired and very thirsty. He had finished the water in his bottle and felt to the ground. But after professor gave him drops of water to make him better, Axel said they had to go back. Professor promised him that if they didn't find water in the western passage, they would go back together. وصلوا الى مفترق الطرق بعد مرور ثلاثة أيام حيث كان أكسيل متعب وعطشان. إستنفذ أكسيل الماء الذى كان معه فى زجاجته وسقط على الأرض ولكن بعدما أعطاه البروفيسور قطرات من المياه ليتحسن، قال أكسيل بأنهم يجب أن يعودوا. وعد البروفيسور أكسيل بأنهم إذ لم يجدوا مياه فى الممر الغربى سيعودون سوياً. The passage led down through older rocks. Axel heard a noise which was a noise of running water. Somewhere on the other side of the wall of rock there was an underground river. Hans had made a large hole in the wall by using a pickaxe for an hour. A strong jet of water burst out of the wall of the rock. It was so strong that it knocked Hans down. Hans cried out in pain because the water was almost boiling. The open air made it cool down and the three men drank. It tasted better than any water they had ever tasted before. كان الممر نازلاً لأسفل عبر صخور قديمه وسمع أكسيل صوت ضوضاء فكانت هذه الضوضاء هى صوت لمياه جاريه، وكان هناك فى مكان ما فى الناحيه الأخرى من الحائط الصخرى نهر تحت الأرض (جوفى) فصنع هانس ثقب كبير فى الحائط بإستخدام البلطه لمدة ساعه. فانفجرت نافورة مياه شديدة القوه من الثقب التى صنعه هانس وتسببت فى إلقاؤه على الأرض. صرخ هانس من الألم لأن المياه كانت تصل حرارتها تقريباً الى درجة الغليان ولكن الهواء الطلق جعل المياه أكثر بروده فشرب الثلاثة رجال. كان مذاق هذه المياه أفضل من أى مياه تذوقوها من قبل. The underground river would run beside them as they descended. It would show them the quickest way down. This made Axel more eager to continue the journey. Professor told Axel one day that they were two hundred kiometres west of their starting point or they were under the Atlantic Ocean. Axel felt a pain in his ear because of the increased air pressure. Professor asked him to breathe quickly to relieve the pressure. بينما كان الثلاثة رجال نازلون، كان النهر الجوفى يجرى بجوارهم فكأنه يوضح لهم أسرع طريق للنزول الى أسفل مما جعل أكسيل أكثر شوق لإكمال الرحلع.أخبر البروفيسور أكسيل بأنهم على بُعد مائتان كيلومتر غرباً من نقطة البدايه لرحلتهم أو أنهم تحت المحيط الأطلنطى. شعر أكسيل بالم فى أذنه بسبب ضغط الهواء الزائد فطلب منه البروفيسور أن يتنفس بطريقه سريعه ليقلل الضغط؟ The three men walked in silence. Axel was in front of Hans and the professor carrying the torch. Axel turned to speak to his uncle but he didn't find him or Hans. He was alone. He waited for a quarter of an hour, but there was no sign of them. ساروا الثلاثة رجال فى هدوء وكان أكسيل يسير حاملاً البطاريه أمام هانس والبروفيسور. إلتف أكسيل ليتحدث مع عمه ولكنه لم يجده ولم يجد هانس أيضاً. كان أكسيل وحيداً. إنتظر أكسيل حوالى ربع ساعه ولكن لم يكن يوجد أى أثر لهم. He tried to go backwards to find them by following the river, but the rocks were dry. He walked upwards for half an hour, but he hit a rock wall and fell down. The torch dropped and was broken. Axel lay in a complete darkness. He ran back down the path waving his arms and shouting like a mad man. He ran against the rocks and cut himself. At last he fell on the floor and fainted. حاول أكسيل الرجوع للخلف لإيجادهم عن طريق إتباع مسار النهر ولكن كانت الصخور جافه. سار أكسيل لأعلى لمدة نصف ساعه ولكنه إصطدم بحائط صخرى وسقط لأسفل. البطاريه أيضاً سقطت وتحطمت وظل أكسيل فى ظلام حالك. رجع أكسيل وجرى الى أسفل الممر وهو يلوح بيديه ويصرخ مثل رجل مجنون. جرى أكسيل فى اتجاه عكس طريق الصخور وجرح نفسه. وفى النهايه سقط أكسيل على الأرض وأغمى عليه.
