I had rather (that) you told him than( that) I did .
هذا ما يسمى past subjunctive

I'd rather you didn't smoke.

I had rather you hadn't smoked.

Both are expressing preferences but the second is more polite/remote.

Note the tenses.

There`s nothing called HAD RATHER

It is either
d rather`
or
would rather

However, we say
d better = had better`

Dear respected sirs,

We have to stick to standard grammar. This is what we deal with in exams

Otherwise anything is possible because it is a language

Because if a student wrote had rather, shall you, etc. ,this is definitely going to be wrong because it not standard grammar. We can accept these in certain situations only as you have seen.

Please please any irregular rule (and they are millions) should be discussed away from the students, either in the teachers` room or mention that it is only for teachers (for the sake of not confusing the students).
