1- Augustus was delicately brought up.

2-The immense man added to the depressed artist's misery by taking his bed .

3-Before he reached the ferry he was astonished to hear the boatman's rough voice calling to him through the darkness impatiently.The boatman who lived at Starcross was supposed to be asleep at that late hour of the night. Everyone knows that the ferry works only from sunrise till sunset . The boatman couldn't possibly have known that Mr D- was going to be there. He concluded that the boatman had heard someone else call to him from a passing boat.

4-No, the reader shouldn't feel any sympathy for Augustus as he was not a gifted artist. He was conceited and self-centred.

QUOTATION

A- This was said by the prisoner who was accused of murder to the judge.

B- He is talking about Mr D-

C- He says it because he knows that Mr D- could tell the court that at the time of the murder he was indeed mending a window, therefore proving his innocence.
