Working as a clinical biochemist
Clinical biochemists produce and interpret the results of chemical and biochemical analyses performed on blood and other body fluids to help in the diagnosis and management of disease. Increasingly their work includes selected population screening and they advise on planning and monitoring treatment. Those who choose clinical biochemistry normally work in a hospital department or clinical chemistry/chemical pathology laboratory and analyse low concentrations of substances in patients blood and other fluids to aid clinicians in the diagnosis of disease and in monitoring its course during treatment.

Working as a clinical microbiologist
Clinical microbiologists, or clinical scientist in microbiology, deal with identifying bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections. This helps prevent epidemics and has a large influence on the clinical management of patients.

Clinical microbiologists work in diagnostic laboratories and pathology departments in large hospitals and medical schools. For example, the function of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) is "to protect the community (or any part of the community) against infectious diseases and other dangers to health". Through its Centre for Infections, the HPA is a major employer of clinical microbiologists and epidemiologists.

The work focuses on disease diagnosis, treatment and surveillance; clinical scientists often collaborate closely with health care professionals. There is some opportunity to carry out research and development projects in the specialisms of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology, often working in collaboration with clinical or industrial colleagues.

Education and training. The usual requirement for an entry-level position as a clinical laboratory technologist is a bachelor's degree with a major in medical technology or one of the life sciences; however, it is possible to qualify for some jobs with a combination of education and on-the-job and specialized training. Universities and hospitals offer medical technology programs.
Bachelor's degree programs in medical technology include courses in chemistry, biological sciences, microbiology, mathematics, and statistics, as well as specialized courses devoted to knowledge and skills used in the clinical laboratory. Many programs also offer or require courses in management, business, and computer applications. The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act requires technologists who perform highly complex tests to have at least an associate degree.
Medical and clinical laboratory technicians generally have either an associate degree from a community or junior college or a certificate from a hospital, a vocational or technical school, or the Armed Forces. A few technicians learn their skills on the job.

What is a Clinical Lab Technician?
• Clinical lab technicians work primarily behind the scenes under the direct supervision of a licensed clinical technologist, usually in a hospital-based laboratory. it is possible to substitute part of the education requirements for clinical laboratory technologists with relevant work experience and on the job training, though the norm is a bachelor’s degree focusing on the life sciences or medical technology. Medical technology programs are available through both universities and some hospitals.

Statistics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, microbiology, and more advanced classes in clinical skills constitute some of the required classes to obtain a bachelor’s degree in medical technology. Business management and computer courses are offered by several programs. The minimum requirement to carry out advanced clinical tests is an associate degree as mandated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.

Clinical laboratory technicians may be trained on the job, though the majority obtain their associate degree or certificate through a variety of means, including junior colleges, vocational schools, hospitals, or the military.

1-Laboratory Director
The director of a clinical laboratory is usually a board-certified medical doctor or PhD scientist. He or she must meet the requirements of CLIA, the federal law governing U.S. laboratories, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) if the lab is to be CAP-accredited. Many are pathologists, physicians who specialize in the science of identifying the nature and cause of disease and who are specially trained to interpret biopsy results, Pap smears, and other cytologic samples. If the laboratory director is not a pathologist, a consulting pathologist may be retained to provide services that require their expertise, including interpreting test results. The director is responsible for managing overall operations within the lab, including maintaining the standards of agencies that inspect and accredit the lab and ensuring that all technical, clinical, and administrative functions of the lab are performed.

They may train other lab personnel, perform quality control checks, evaluate new instruments, and implement new test procedures. 4-Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT)
A medical laboratory technician (MLT) or a clinical laboratory technician (CLT) performs routine tests in all areas of the clinical lab. Usually, CLTs/MLTs have an associate degree and have completed an accredited CLT/MLT or certificate program. CLTs/MLTs will use microscopes as well as other laboratory equipment and techniques to perform tests. Like CLSs/MTs, they may specialize in certain areas of the lab, such as clinical chemistry, and may be certified by ASCP or NCA.
There may be other personnel within the lab as well, including several with very specific functions. These include:
• Cytogeneticist. Cytogenetics is a subspecialty of medical genetics. Clinical cytogeneticists are usually MDs or PhDs who have been certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics. They perform and interpret cytogenetic analyses in order to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities and help manage genetic disorders. They are assisted by cytogenetic technologists, who usually have a bachelor's degree in the sciences or clinical laboratory science/medical technology and CLSp(CG) certification from an approved organization like NCA. Technologists prepare biological specimens for genetic studies and perform cell culture and microscopic analyses as part of cytogenetic studies.
• Cytotechnologist (CT). CTs are specialized laboratory technologists whose job it is to prepare and examine samples of cells under a microscope to look for signs of cancer or other diseases by recognizing changes in the cells, such as their color, size, or shape. They most frequently examine Pap smears for cervical cancer. They may assist in performing fine needle aspirations (using a needle to remove cells from a cyst) and examine fluid removed during the procedure for abnormal cells. They assist pathologists in making a diagnosis. Usually, CTs have a bachelor degree and have completed an accredited CT program.
• Histotechnologist (HTL). Also known as histologists, these technologists work in the pathology lab and are trained in the preparation of tissue samples used to diagnose disease. They help the pathologist to analyze small sections of body tissue that have been removed from a patient. The tissue sample undergoes special preparation before being examined under a microscope to look for evidence of disease, such as cancer. HTLs perform more complex procedures than histologic technicians (HTs) (below) and may supervise their work. They usually have a bachelor degree and have completed an accredited HTL program.
• Histologic technician (HT). HTs perform routine specimen preparation from biopsies, a task that usually involves slicing thin pieces of human tissue and mounting them on glass slides for examination under the microscope by the pathologist. Usually, HTs have completed high school and an accredited histology program.
• Phlebotomist (PBT): Phlebotomists, also called phlebotomy technicians, work directly with you, the patient, to draw your blood for laboratory tests using venipuncture or skin puncture. Usually, PBTs have completed high school and have received phlebotomy training, either through a program or on the job experience. Some may be certified.
In addition, labs have people who manage the operations. While these professionals may not be performing tests on your samples, they are an important element in ensuring that the laboratory runs efficiently. Many labs are looking for laboratory professionals with advanced degrees and experience
