I thought about causative at first, but ruled that out

I guess "We`ve got them" means = It is us who hold things against them.
Or, they cannot expose us.

It`s best not to trust even the best of men = We can trust Freyler sometimes, but in more important issues (like the secret of Rudolf replacing the king) it is best to keep it a secret even from whoever we trust.

It seems that a king,s life is quite hard, but a pretend king`s life is even harder = If I were a king I would live a hard life (though I would behave naturally because I am the king), but to act it or pretend it is much harder because we are two different characters.
