dictionary is clear on the meanings of these words. Please check it. Sometimes usage varies from American to British. For example, I (American) prefer to say 
sporting goods store, but 
sports goods is also correct. Some meanings overlap, so both could be used.
Both 
sports event and 
sporting event are used (and therefore, correct). A 
sporting event is a multi-sport event. A football match is a 
sports event.
