You are correct in realizing that "during" is usually not followed directly by a gerund. The gerund would most likely be preceded by an article:
During the building of the house, a severe tornado occurred in the area, completely destroying the construction. The director realized during a reading of the play that the entire third act had to be changed. However, there are some instances where "during" is followed directly by a gerund, as in "Don't disturb the animals during eating." There are other prepositions, too, which are not usually followed directly by gerunds.
