I thought about causative at first, but ruled that out

I guess "We`ve got them" means = It is us who hold things against them.
Or, they cannot expose us.

It`s best not to trust even the best of men = We can trust Freyler sometimes, but in more important issues (like the secret of Rudolf replacing the king) it is best to keep it a secret even from whoever we trust.

It seems that a king,s life is quite hard, but a pretend king`s life is even harder = If I were a king I would live a hard life (though I would behave naturally because I am the king), but to act it or pretend it is much harder because we are two different characters.

Yes. like in the following examples
a pretend foreign accent - when Rudolf spoke to Detchard
a pretend king - Referring to Rudolf Rassendyll

الصفة من close هى closed أما الصفة من open هى open أيضاً وهذه ليست صيغة causativeكما تريد ان تقول بإعتراضك عليها فقط هى تعنى to keep it open or to open it هذا والله اعلم
