Noha is older than her sister Nada ففى هذه الجملة طرفى المقارنة منفصلين وهما Noha و Nada وبالتالى لا يمكن كما هو معروف استخدام elder فى هذا السياق Noha is elder or the two sisters الطرفين هى هذا الصيغة هما Noha و the two sisters وبما أن the two sisters = Noha+Nada فلا توجد مقارنة حيث أن Noha متضمنة فى الطرفين ولا يمكن أن نقارن Noha مع نفسها. وفيما يتعلق بصحة كلامى بمكن الرجوع إلى قاموسى Oxford Advaced learner & Longman Dictionary of Contemporay English للتأكد من أن الصيغة the elder of the two ليست خطأ ![]() ![]() آخر تعديل بواسطة H0riz0n ، 30-04-2010 الساعة 04:25 PM |

الاجابه هى : the older وهنا لنا ملاحظتان الاولى : ما الفرق بين older -elder كما ذكر فى English Grammar in Use The comparative of old is older: Tom looks older than he really is. We use elder when we are talking about members of a family . We say my elder brother/sister/son/daughter My elder brother is a pilot. We use elder only before a noun : My brother is older than me. not :elder than me الملاحظه الثانيه:هل نستخدم comparative ولا superlative ذكر فى A Comprehensive English Grammar الاتى When two persons or two things are compared the comparative is generally used : To choose the lesser of two evils. The greater part of the work. The taller half of the 20th century. She is the older and the more beautiful of the two sisters . But She is the oldest and the most beautiful of the three sisters. ملحوظه اخرى: ليست متعلقه بتلك الجمله Elders can be used as a noun meaning those of an earlier generation implying wiser than we are You should respect your elders and betters. |

Is it correct to say "Nora is the shorter of the two girls"?
Sender Rahmah Atef Position Student Yes. When we are comparing only two things, some people prefer the comparative rather than the superlative. However, it is also possible to use the superlative because we are comparing members of a group, even if the group has only two members. And of course we always use the superlative when comparing three or more. Nora is the shorter of the two girls. Nora is the shortest of the two girls. (not acceptable to some) Nora is the shortest girl in the class. In real life, native speakers often use the superlative when comparing only two things, especially in informal speech. Some think that this is incorrect and that the comparative must be used. A question of this sort should not appear on an exam because there are two possible answers. Students have been taught that when they see the, they must use the superlative. But which of the rules would an examiner follow -- that the comparative must be used when only two things are compared, or that the must be followed by the superlative? This would be an unfair question on an exam http://www.longmansec.com.eg/QuestAns.aspx?QA_ID=910 |
