Adrère Amellal is an extraordinary eco resort in Egypt’s Siwa Oasis. Electricity and telephone free, this hotel on the edge of the Sahara is self sufficient, providing guests with a welcome escape from their 21st-century lifestyles.

The eco resort’s desert surroundings give way to an oasis of date palm groves, olive trees, freshwater Roman springs and saltwater lakes – a truly romantic and otherworldly environment. Siwa can be explored on horseback or on foot, making this a great destination for those with a sense of adventure.

The eco resort is built in the traditional Siwan style out of kershef, a mixture of sun-dried salt, mud and sand; which naturally keeps rooms cool in summer and mild during winter. Electricity-free, the hotel is lit by lanterns and candles during the evenings.

The facilities

There's plenty to do here, for the active and not so active. Exploring the oasis and horse riding expeditions are tempered by by the nearby Roman springs - it is, after all, a holiday! All of the food is organic and locally grown (in many cases, home grown), cooked in traditional honey-glazed clay pots. Breakfast and lunch is taken by a natural pool, and dinner is dished up in a different area every evening.

The rooms

Adrère Amellal has 39 rooms and suites, with simple furniture, palm roofing and walls made of rock salt. Each boasts a private bathroom and a breathtaking open view of Siwa Lake and the Sahara.

Children

The Large Suite, which has three double beds and two bathrooms, is the best option for families.

Eating in

Meals are regional specialities, prepared with organic locally sourced or home grown ingredients. Lunch is served by the pool, and dinner is taken in a different place every night.
